I would like to know on the Panzer IV J, the two exhaust pipes, do they stand straight up or are they at an angle? If at an angle how much of an angle are we talking about?

I have the Squadron/signal PzKpfw IV in action book and various others..... I cannot for the life of me see any pictures of them. I know what you mean..the LATE twin vertical type exhausts (as in a panther).
I seem to remember that the exhausts were not in fact completely vertical but in a very acute angle.
I will try to find some definate information for you shortly......
I will edit this post so look back again tomorrow.

Yes, the twin verticle exhausts. I will look to see if see if there are any other photos of the rear end of the Panzer IVJ. :-)

The "flammentoter" exhausts apparently were the very much the exception rather than the rule. If you can get some pictures of :
StuG IV
Jagdpanzer IV L/70 (zwischenlösung)
SOME of them had the same flammentoter set up and more pictures of these exist than the PzKpfw IV ausf J late.
On page 67 of Concord's Panzers in the East volume 2. There is a knocked out StuG IV.
One of the exhaust pipes have been blown off, but the other vertical pipe is stuck on the rear hull. There is a flat metal plate with folded sides which was at the base of the vertical pipe.

That's pretty much it I'm afraid.
If you put the ausf J muffler barrelled exhaust on no-one would blame you, it would be factually correct and easier too.
But the vertical ones do look very cool if not rare.

PS If you must model the flammentoter, then I think that the exhaust would follow the angled slope of the rear hull... just my 2 cents mate

Try this Jody,

Accurate Armour

Has a set to update Tamiya 1/35. If you scaled this down...perhaps they might send you a photocopy of the instructions......

Wollf, looking in my Achtung panzer 3,they appear to be angled more than the rear plate.so tilt them down (away ) about 5-10 degrees more. There is a photo of one,and it is a shroud surrounding the actual pipe.If the pipe was 2" in dia,the shroud part stood off about anothe 2" all around.
