What is the general consensus on painting eyes on 1/35 scale figures? Should the "whites" be panted white? I always thought that the figure is too far away to see the white of the eye, and I just painted them the same color as the face. At what scale should the whites be painted: 1/24? 1/16?

Thanks,
Jim

I work in 54mm, slightly larger that 1/35. I always paint the whites. I use Andrea pale flesh, then add a brown or blue iris. Then I reduce the size with base flesh color before highlighting and shading the rest of the face. Click on my photos for examples.
If your figiure is always going to be seen at arms lenght, I guess you can get by, but if there's any close scrutiny, the lack of detail will be noticeable.

So you use a lighter flesh color, not straight white. Correct?

Nope, never neat white. Even at 1:1 eyeballs are never pure white. In fact, IMO even James' figure's eyes are too white. As Al says, use a pale flesh colour else use your highest highlight colour.

If you check out John Pradarelli’s Painting a face: Oils over Acrylic article on Historicus Forma I think he covers eyes there as well.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I've always thought that white eyes always looked a little pop-eyed.

I usually use a ligth flesh or beige for the whites of the eyes, then lay in your pupil and eye color and trim it down with the base color for the skin. I have pictures posted here on the site under wolverine206
