Hello,
I've used cast-a-coat from the Small Shop EU. Works like a charm and not too hard to use. I've also used Mr. Surfacer.

It depends on the coarseness of the real stuff. You can also use fine textured spray paint (like Rust-Oleum textured spray paint). Just mask off the areas you don't want the anti-slip on and spray off the paint, let it dry, remove the masking tape...et voilą ! Several Armorama members have already tried this technique with satisfying results...

I also seem to recall people using very fine grit sandpaper for such.

I use a textured paint in a rattle can. It's a beige coloured paint that simulates a suede fabric surface. There are many different brand names but the key is a TEXTURED spray so it will give you a rough finish that looks just like non-skid. You can mask off areas, create stripes by using masking tape, all sorts of effects and then just spray on a few light coats.
This gives a little thickness to the non-skid and also accurately portrays a rough, textured surface in scale.

I agree with Bob, textured paint works like a charm. In Canada its marketed under the Rustoleum brand but I'll bet its available at any DIY store regardless of country. Just make sure to clean the nozzle after spraying it'll gum it up really fast.

The brand I have is the DIY store's (Rona) own make, I think. The brand is KG Excel in nubuck tan and It's $8 for a large 340g can that'll do a lot of models. I was dubious about the suede finish thinking it might be too smooth but it's got just the right amount of 'rough' to it. You should give it a try David, it really works.
