Hi,
what kind of conversion do you want to do? You could change some arms, heads etc. and fill the gabs putty. To get another winkle of the arm you could cut it in to two pieces and connect them with brass wire. Then you take putty to correct the arm. Do you mean something like this? Conversion is a very vwide term. It beginn with changing arms or heads to create new arms, legs so you nearly get a new Figure. There are some good site with Information about sculpting and so.
This site from Luc Klinkers is very good and shows what is possible when you have the talent and technic. Under "workbench" you can see a article about how he sculpt his Figures.

Thanks,
I'm no where near the ability to sculpt yet. So, cutting repositioning and body part swaping is where I'd like to start. Do I try to find a figure that is close to what I want or are ther radical methods short of sculpting scratch parts?

Michael: Sheperd Paines' "How to build dioramas" has a fair section, geared to the beginner on basic figure conversions. As a figure sculptor, it's whwere I got my start. Good luck.

Thanks all,
I have several Shep Paine books they're great but still quite general. What I'm looking for is a here is Fiqure A and we wish to make it into Figure B here are the steps and tecniques A,B,C,ect. It would be great if any of you veteran figure guys could put something together. Thanks,
Mike

Try the Osprey modelling books. I've got the falshirmjager and Waffen-SS books and they're terrific. They both feature conversions, however that said the conversions are aimed at modellers of an intermediate to advanced level. They assume you know how to do basic conversions.
If you want to start converting figures there's only one way to do it: just do it!
Start with the basics of closing hands, adjusting gaits and seated positions (like in Shep's books). Then move onto repositioning bigger parts like limbs before moving onto totally redoing a figure.
And post pics of your work, the folks here on Armorama and the figure branch of KitMaker, Historicus Forma (we also have professional sculptors and box-artist on our staff to advise you) will be more than willing to share tips, tricks and constructive criticism with you.
