I assume you mean the breed of dog. German Shepherd's are a breed of dog, and thus the coat colouration and variation is the same the world over. Do a Google for pictures of the dogs, or check Wiki.

If german Sheppard doesn't work, try "Schäferhund".
I just finished painting one yesterday and I must say it is a hell of a lot more difficult then it looks! I'll be posting pics of it shortly.

You will find the all black version is actually a Belgium Shepheard, the German shepheard also known as Alsation should be black and tan although you can get an all white one also.

A year ago I bought Dragons "6098 GERMAN FELDGENDARMERIE w/DOGS" but I must say that the dogs seems small, German shepards are quite big and these two dogs bearley reach over the soldiers boots.

German shepherd (GSD) can be black. But it doesnt mean its from germany or from any other specific location, its just deviation in colour, and at moment its more separate breed than different colour.
Majority of GSD's are tan/black. However, there are 2 lines of GSD's too. Working lines, and show lines. Show lines should be refered to tan/black dogs, and working lines usualy are silver (or sable) GSD's. Those lines are separate, becouse of different criteria of selection for breeding (working abilities vs looks). Thus, if you are searching for "historicaly correct" working dog, it should be painted as silver GSD. Howerer, as it was war time, every dog counts, so youre free to paint it tan/black too, as it will be correct aswell
check out wiki page on gsd:
Wikipedia about GSD
White GSD is currently called Swiss Shepherd.
Belgian shepherd has 4 sub breeds, one of them is long fur black (i have one)
But working breed of belgian shepherds is Malinois.
wikipedia about BS
And finally, about GSD size. GSD is big, but NOT HUGE dog. This means that adult male, should be not bigger than 65cm tall at his back. This makes tham somewhat medium size. I got GSD, whitch is slightly overgrown, and hes 68cm high, but thats slightly above my knee. So if in dragon set, theyre like shown in picture, they are preaty much right size for GSD. And finally, the smaller GSD, the faster and more agile it is
I hope this will help to clarify a bit, im more "dog" person than armour
