Hey Everyone, I was hoping to find some info on the Berlin Brigade camo scheme carried on Brit Chieftains. I know that it was a standard pattern but I have seen several variations on the net (on models). I'm looking for pics that can show what the pattern was over all of the tank and what colors were used. I just bought the old Airfix kit in 72nd scale and want to do this scheme with a little scratchbuilding to it. Any help would be immensley greatful! Cheers!

Click on the link and then the colour plate....it'll open up a PDF file of the camouflage pattern and colours on a Chieftain.

Jason, Mike, and Max, thanks a ton for the info, it's all great. One other question though, did the scheme cover the engine deck as well? Haven't seen any photos from that angle. I just started with the turret assembly. Wheh! Not a good fit! Trying to decide how to simulate cast iron surfaces in 72nd scale, lot's of fun!Kerry

The engine decks were painted all brown within the resilient rail and on the gearbox deck, same colour as on the hull. The reasoning behind this was that the NBC pack/turret baskets covered the engine deck and the gearbox deck was always oily anyway so it was pointles to cam in.

If you are looking for good references then pick up the Tankograd book on the British Infantry Berlin Brigade.......very nice high quality colour images of the Chieftains in the Berlin Brigade scheme.

Great stuff guys! Steve, I've seen Marco's Mk.5. Really nice example, but different than Karl-Heinz Pfarr's or Brian Thewlis examples, thus my quest. I'm looking forward to doing a decent example in braille scale! Cheers Fellas!

Does anyone know if there are any decals available in 1/35 to do one of these tanks?

There is no decal set that I have seen. It is not included in the AA Mk.10 conversion.

You would probably have to piece together the correct decals.

Thanks Jason. Info on the nest so far would suggest the tanks didn't carry much ID anyway, except for maybe the UJ on the front/rear guards.

I've been doing some research this morning to pin down the colours & there seems to be a couple of schools of thought. Some info suggests:
the original Bronze Green was the base, especially for the hull & running gear, whilst the darker colour topside is brown.
Bronze Green was the darker colour all over.
Brown is the darker colour.

Anyone with anything definite?

There are markings other than the Union Jack including vehicle registration numbers, Squadron tactical markings, call signs, and the Berlin Brigade formation sign.

As far as I can see and have researched the suspension including road wheels, idlers, drive sprockets, and return rollers are all painted a semi gloss black.

The camouflage colours are very close to....

RAL 9010....white
RAL 7031...bluegrey
RAL 8025...brown

All this info is in the Tankograd book on the British Infantry Berlin Brigade....as I stated earlier in this thread it is well worth picking up.

Dug my Tamiya Mk 5 out and going to take a stab at this scheme. If i understand this, the road wheels and lower hull is painted the standard bronze green
