A good grass option anywhere is household twine. You can cut it any length. Once glued to a PVA/Water mix or sprinkled over spray adhesive you can spray paint it any color.

I use the Woodland Scenics grasses and flocks as well as the Citadel grass for a shorter, harder tuft.
Here's a pic of some groundwork I'm currently using it for:

In my opinion the trick to get realistic looking grass is to use a lot of variation in it. In my opinion the best product so far for grass is Heki DecoVlies. I have no clue how easy it is to get that stuff in the US. You might look in the modelrailroad shop. It surely isn't cheap but it looks the part. Check for yourself
It comes in a sheet which roughly is 1,5 A4 sheet, I usually cut out sections from a couple of cm by a couple of cm and rotate them and glue them together just a bit closer. I often mix two sorts of Decovlies too for a more random effect. Next to that I always stick in some longer gras made from the bristles of a softhaired bristle brush found for a couple of euro's in the bargainbin of the DIY store. On the edges of gras (border where grass meets road) I usually sprinkle some of the finer and smaller static grass to create a nicer transition between grass and road. Every now and then I like to have a little branch of stub or little bush to come out of the grasswork. This depends a bit on what I can find in the garden.
I hope this helps you a bit on the way

Hi Lee. YouŽll probably get loads of suggestions, as these are all good products.
Unless your building a putting green, grass is generally better modelled as wild and natural, therefore various lengths, types and colours work best. Sometimes, the colours dont look very natural, straight from the bag, but washes of suitable colours rectifies this and ties all the colours together better. In the image below, you can see the different grass products added, before painting.

Hi Lee
As previously suggested by Robert Blokker i would go for the Heki Decovlies " if you can get it " . I have no experience with any other types of grass effects so I carnt compare ,but found this easy to use and it looks the part .
Here I used the - Heki Decovlies 1574 Wild grass savanna -
Hope this helps, , , Andy

Here's a vote for Silfor
It comes in several colors and lengths.
It's available from Military Miniatures Warehouse and Scenic Express. Again, not cheap but extrememly realistic.

A cheap option for long grass is horse hair.

Yes, but it's getting them horses to sit still while you give 'em a haircut that can get expensive in doctor's bills....

Agreed but the easy way is to go to a music shop and ask for/collect the strings from the bows of violins and chellos after they have been changed.
