I think it's an alright kit for its vintage. Lots of molded on detail that could be replaced with resin/PE. The crew is way too stiff. A Jordi Rubio or similar barrel would save a lot of time. I built mine OOB and I think I got an award or two for it.

Eduard has a nice PE set for this kit.
Just go to the site and click on ''advanced search'' (lower left of your screen) and type in the catalog number 35349.
Here you can read/download/print the instruction sheets that come with the set, so you can see what can be changed on the 88.
This is how I do it know, I try to find things that I can replace without buying those expensive aftermarket sets

I built this same kit 28 years ago. So the only thing wrong is its age. With all the goodies out there for it, I'm sure it'll be equal to today's standards

I cannot give you specifics of what is wrong with the kit, but I have this at home and have read quite a few reviews or comments about it. For its age it is regarded as a good kit with (as the guys have agreed) potential. I have never heard much bad press about it. The figures may not have stood the test of time, but with a little care and attention, these can be made nice as well. Why I bought the kit was for its diorama possibilities. It can be presented in travelling position or in firing and the wheels sections are seperate. there is also a motorbike included. good value in my eyes!

This kit has been around a long time and I can't see really anything wrong with it, other than being a little dated. If I was to pick one problem with it I would say it would be the figures, but these can be replaced with after-market items if you so desire.

There are also PE sets for it, but OOTB it's pretty darn good, for it's age. Can't say that about many models out there.

Take care, sgirty

I would think that Tamiya would come out with an updated crew set for this model. I mean the figures really suck by today's standards. I have two of the guns completed, just waiting on decent crew figures to complete a diorama. If I hit the lottery I'll buy resin.

That said, I think the guns themselves build up great OOB. If they didn't someone else would have realeased a better version by now. I built two and everytime I see the kit in the hobby shop a want to build another one.

Hi There
I've just built one too.I was given it by a friend who'd had it in his loft for years(the date on the sprues was 1972)It builds into a nice kit oob,my only gripe is that there is no Dak crew if you decide to build the desert version.
I did hear somewhere that Tamiya had looked at a particular preserved model when they took measurements etc to make the kit,The problem was that the gun they looked at was used as an experimental guinea pig so lots of bits aren't as used in theatre. If i'm wrong on this i'm sure someone will correct me.
All i need now is the halftrack to go with it.
Regards
Peter
