I am trying my hand at figure conversion and when I see articles like this it really inspires me

Hi Steve. Like Mike above, this is inspiring, and where I want my modelling to go more towards. I see this as "real" modelling". Love what you´ve done as its done so well and rather original. Your efforts in the sculpting field have really paid off, and in a very short time, you´ve come a long way. This is definately the best yet.

Hi Steve
This is awesome, they look amazing. I am beginning to start trying to sculpt my figures and every attempt so far has been scrapped and thrown away, they are that bad. As said previously, this post is pretty inspirational for me. I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions:
1. How did you make the torsos in the first picture, are they sculpted or just premade with the detail removed with a scalpel?
2. What 'clay' do you use? I use milliput and find it quite difficult to work with
3. How do you do all the fine details? I find this really difficult and everything becomes way too oversized!

Thanks very much. Like I said, these guys are awesome, can't wait to see some paint on them. Nick

Frank..thankyou mate, hope this gives you the push to start in figure sculpting,i can honestly say that looking at others doing it was the inspiration that got me started.

Nick..Sounds like you are on the way already, everyone has to start with their first figure and mine was a disaster also. The thing to rememer is always learn form each one.I have found that it isnt encouragement that helped me(although this is nice)it is the constructive criticism that really helped from others who could sculpt.
I would strongly suggest doing some figure conversion work, simply pose changes, arms, legs etc before sculpting a full figure as this will help you get used to working with the putty and help you maintain proportions.
as for your questions

#1..i normally make the torso from milliput but in this case because of the ammount of figures i used the torso from some DML figures, just carve back all the detail work then apply putty over this.
#2..i also started out using Milliput but found it very difficult to use, especially blending fresh onto set putty. The stuff i use now is Magicsculpt which i order through El Greco miniatures in the U.K.This stuff is far superior and will make sculpting a lot easier,i still use milliput but only for making the torsos and bulking out the figure.
#3..The fine details are probably the hardest part to do along with proportions,it is a case of practise, its far easier to have a commercial piece from a kit at hand to check size against as you progress.

If you need any help drop into Historicus Formas sculpting section and i will be glad to help as will others.

Well done Steve!

This is a superbe idea and your execution of it splendid. I am just trying to sculpt two figs myself, so i really appreciate your effort.

Regarding Shay's idea (Hi Shay!). There are pictures out there of german prisoners sitting on the hood of US-Jeep's, and it looks like you would have some space left on the hood of the Protze :-)

A dog inbetween the russians would perhaps be a good idea to ?

I'm looking forward to see this all painted

Cheers
Claude

Hope to see your sculpted figures posted here soon .
