I finished building the diorama base for my Splash dio : a small café terrace , surrounded by a nice brick wall at two sides. There's a large fountain in the corner with bronze devil heads mounted on the wall "spitting" water into the fountain..

So I started painting the whole thing.

The water looked quite nice. I made plaster water, and started painting with the "varnish layers" technique. A field grey base color (Tamiya 65) looks very nice for water. Every evening, I added one or two layers of varnish, each time diminishing the amount of paint mixed through the varnish. It looked very nice. To top it off and give things a nice glossy aspect, I added a layer of clear polyurethane (two components) resin.. I must say the end result really looked excellent.

Then I started painting the walls. To avoid any paint or plaster dust to stick in the PU resin, I added a coat of Maskoll latex on the water.

Last night, when the wall was painted, I tried to remove the latex protection.

HORROR !!! the latex has fused with the PU resin top coating, making it stick as a matt purple layer on top of the water. When I tried to remove it, I ripped away a part of the PU. Result : the whole fountain is absolutely FUBAR.

Tonight, I hope to find new courage to start all over again. The walls and the devil's heads look just too nice to ditch the project. And the water looked well, too... Aah the worries of modeling...

Jan

Now that`s really bad news. I know how you feel when you have put a lot of time in something and then just because you don`t know how some things react or what happens if... I usually get really angry then and shortly aftyer that really depressed.

Sorry to hear what happened dude I hope you can finish it in time

NOooooooooo
I am so sorry. What is it about water, it is so 'all or nothing'. You can't 'fix it' or cover it or rip it out (easily) and repair it.

It's stories like this that make me gulp when I pour water. I poured my first layer of resin last night, second one today. I'm hoping it turns out ok.

I hope you can get a fix going and enter your diorama - it sounds cool.

sorry to hear this..... as the English say in Dutch "Het Zuigt"

I hope things will turn out better in the re-run.

Sorry to hear about the water problem. You must have way more patience than I do. If it was me chances are the whole thing would be in the trash, after I had jumped up and down on it for half an hour.

Oh well, at least in modelling, unlike in life, you have as many chances to fix an error as you want. I hope things turn out to your satisfaction.

I am sorry to hear that, just sit down, breath and think. It will work out in the end.

I suppose, on the bright side, you've spared the rest of us that experience.

Good luck with it!

A set back today ....... might mean when you do it agin, it will turn out better as you have the experience of doing it once already. Trying to be positive sometimes helps ......... not that it is easy to be positive after this happening. I have a bottol of the same maskol at home and have never used it ...... why? Im afriad something like this will happen!
Good luck Jan, with the recovery work!

all may not be lost!

Oh, it's lost all right. A big chunck of the top layer came off, so I ripped it all out. I cleaned it up, and now I'm ready to restart the water making process. I didn't have time today (went to my sister-in-law at the Dutch coast) and tomorrow will be busy too (go to sell my wife's car in the second hand market).
I'll retry the whole thing, though. The dio is just too nice to stop the construction work.
