Normally they are pretty good at form fitting so unless you want them on a vertical surface.
Another question might be what theater or area. Some have welded rebar or even brackets welded on to hold them in place, some just used ropes, some chicken wire.
So I guess it depends,

Usually a piece of wood between the two front fenders held almost everything in place.

Actually, Jumbos were about the only version of the Sherman that didn't require sandbags. They already had an extra ten tons of steel armor and could sustain multiple hits from an 88.

I agree completely with Gerald. In all my hunting of Sherman photos, (which is by no means absolute) I've never found a photo of a jumbo with sand bags on it.

Not to highjack the thread, but I've seen precious few wartime images of the Jumbo. I have 3 books on the Sherman, all of which address the Jumbo in the text. Between them I think there are maybe 5 images total, 3 of which are the same! So, are there any good books that have good (numerous) wartime images of the Jumbo?

Proof that sandbag armour protection was used on some M4A3E2s. I guess as they were often lead tank when entering enemy held towns etc. some crews (or should I say battalions) didn't want to take any chances, thickened armour or not...
