Sort of what-if model depicting famous "Hell Yeah" tank if it would receive originally proposed tank urban survival kit. The base kit is DML's excellent M1A2 SEP with added scratch built side ERA panels, anti-RPG cage and RWS base. the CROWS station is from AFV Club; stowage consists of Tamiya's Modern Equipment and Modern Stowage sets. The model's base paint coat is WEM's US OIF Sand over Tamiya flat earth. Weathering is done largely by oils and CMK pigments.

Man, that is a fantastic job that you did. I hope my M1A2 SEP ends up half as nice as that. You did a great job with the TUSK details.

I noticed in you sig line that you may do an M1 Grizzly. I have detailed walk around photos on primeportal if you decide to tackle it.

Evening, Brent and thanks for comment. I already have Prime portal walkaround bookmarked and let me thank you for keeping this excellent source for going. I might start Grizzly kit, most likely based on DML's Panther mine clearing vehicle, somewhere in late August, that's when I plan to take short vacation, but until then gotta finish, at least try to, all the active builds from my sig. DML's new M1A2 is an outstanding example of what cooperation between a manufacturer and community yields and I'm sure you will have a lot of fun while building it.
Good luck and cheers

She looks really good. Good job on the TUSK upgrades. A couple pointers. You should add straps to hold the gear on, esp. the fuel cans on the BRE. They will fall off as soon as the tank moves unstrapped. Also, plastic fuel cans are a medium brown color MM Field Drab looks good), not dark green. Looks to be a little silvering on the decals as well. Lastly, the forward TUSK side skirts are not the same as normal ones, they are thinner sheet metal to reduce wight. Yours looks great though, good job.

Great Job like the looks of the modern Beast.
Great overall finish and the tracks well nice indeed.
Thanks for sharing.
Now I want to build mine to after all these campaigns are over.

So Gino what color is good for the Water cans?

MM or Tamiya what Color?

The water jugs (single handle ones below) can come in sand (MM Sand, FS 33531), black (MM Falt Black, FS 37038), or less commonly in dark green (MM Dark Green, FS 34709 ). Sand is probably the most common now. The closest color match to me for the plastic fuel cans is Testors Model Master Field Drab, FS 30118.

Here are some water and fuel cans on my USMC M1A1 Angry American.

Excellent work! The weathering is magnificent! How did you work your way with the oils?

Good point about unstrapped cans. I added straps last night using tamiya tape. The water cans will have to be left as is for time being for I don't have anything close to brown-yellow shade. I will repaint them at once when I restock my paint shelf .

Once I get base shade I'm satisfied with completely dry, whole model receives two to three coats of gloss acrylic or future wax. After it dries, the oils are mixed, I usually go for black-brown-medium gray in equal proportions, and diluted with white spirit (although for this particular model I used odorless substitute). The mixture is then applied to whatever uneven surface detail I want to stand out. Pretty much a standard procedure used by many scale modelers today. The oil stains, however, are done in slightly different way. Main difference is spraying flat clear around immediate are of a canister or fuel tank plug to represent fuel components soaking into the coat of paint and forming that specific greasy stain. I found oil paint interacting with flat finish in almost the same way.

One thing I noticed is your front side skirts. When the ERA tiles are added, the front ballistic armored skirts are removed. They are then replaced by armor plate skirts the same shape, but are just a lot thinner.

Your TUSK simply rocks !!!!

I am really puzzled why some aftermarket company has not made a full TUSK upgrade (I only have LIONROAR's side armor update in resin which is absolutely superb...)

Hi George,
your shift on the other side of the "iron curtain" models is excellent. I like your TUSK Abrams. I can't comment on the accuracy but this kit sure is very inspiring.

Thanks for sharing

Hello George!

Great fictional M1A2 SEP!

I did notice that you appear to be missing the drive's grab handle on the left front fender. The two diagonal holes are there but empty. Otherwise, your Abrams is very well done.

As a first post in several years I'm going to nag at someone's work but...

M1s in Iraq, especally those with TUSK kits don't carry all that gear on the side rails or bustle rack. Its too much of a fire hazard.
I know it looks cool, but its just not accurate. The most that they carry is a cooler and a fire extinguisher or two.

Your tank is in "campaign mode" circa the invasion of 2003 when TUSK wasn't even a concept yet. Even then all that personel gear would get put in those near empty bustle racks before it were lashed to the troop rails.

Other than that, its a very well done tank!

If you read Georges first post, this model is basically fictional. The tank represents a vehicle fitted with the initial concept TUSK so isnt meant to be an accurate representation of a TUSK M1, more 'what-if' build.

Then where are the "plasma laser cannons in the 40 mW range"?

The same lessons learned about urban combat that let to the TUSK kit also led to the adjustment of the load plan to leave all the easily combustible personal gear off the tank or in the sponson boxes.

Just trying to point something he might not have considered when working on the project. I like the "Gypsy wagon" look as much as the next guy, but sometimes its not appropriate. And to any tanker who's crewed an M1 in Iraq, all that stuff stands out as an incongruity.

As stated, its "fictional". Am I gonna get criticized if I built a fictional piece where all my little plastic guys are carrying M240s and RPGS? Maybe I'll add a plasma rifle and the UZI 9mm.
Whos to say my "fictional" piece is wrong?
Throw the history and technical books out on this one...

George built a M1A2 SEP, which does not have a left rear fuel cell fitted.
