Just come across a product which may help you when painting wood. At the moment im building a diorama which includeds a destroyed peasant house and has half a roof. I was wondering how i was going to age the balsa wood im using on the roof and was looking for creosote or something of the like in the shed, but to no avail. For some reason i decided to go through the cleaning cupboard and ive found an old bottle of "scratch cover polish". This is excellent. Its for dark wood so give the impression of aged wood. ive applied a thin layer using cotton buds - q tips i think for our american friends - and ive got the effect i wanted. aged and can still see the grain quite clearly. When applied again it looks like in some places the wood has been burnt.
think i'll have to do a decent recce on the cleaning cupboad now. Will post pics when i get them developed.
happy modeling
Martin
