Hi Guys (and Gals),Over the last few months i`ve become a big fan of the Stryker LAV.There`s plenty of reference photo`s and the kits are relatively in-expsensive to buy and there`s plenty of versions in kit form (a modellers dream ?!?!?).
What puzzles me is what is that thing on the top of the hull behind the drivers station ? (looks like a giant green doughnut or a spare wheel holder).I`ve looked through all my books but none tells what this is.
Can anyone put me out of misery and tell me what this is ?.

First off, it isn't a Stryker LAV, its just a Stryker. The LAV is a USMC vehicle that has a link along the Stryker lineage, but is very different. The item you are describing is a winch drum cover. The vehicle has a built-in self recovery winch. The drum for the cable sits on top of the hull horizontally and is covered to keep it from fouling or sucking in debris.

that would be the hydraulicly operated winch, capable of pulling up to 21,000 pounds in a straight shot. All of the Stryker variants have it except the MGS due to the fact they had to save as much weight as possible.

Actually the Stryker is a LAVIII given a name by the U.S. Army. The LAVIII is a plug and play type of vehicle, you give my company money and we will plug and weapons system or turret onto her that you want. In the plant we still call it a LAVIII the name doesn't change until Uncle Sam gets them.

That is what I meant, the Army doesn't call it a LAV. The US Military vehicle called the LAV is the USMC version. They are both, among others, varients of the LAV system.

The LAVIII is a plug and play type of vehicle,
Does it use a USB port? Sorry, couldn't resist....
Yes, I love the Stryker also. Can't wait for the AFV Club MGS and Trumpeters RV. Have you got Concords excellent Stryker publication? http://www.concord-publications.com/7515/7515.htm
