Hi Guys,
Recently the company I'm leased to has started to haul military vehicles. One bid we won has us hauling a M992. What is it ? Another question I have is what is the difference between a M109 A2 and a M109 A5? I've hauled the A2 and am going to be hauling the A5 from Colorado to Maine. Thanks for any input you might have.

The M992 is a FAASV, a ammo ahuler based on the M109 Chassis.

Not absolutely sure what the difference is between the M109A2 and the A5 other than internal differences...I believe they have the same caliber length of the tube...

During WWII the designation of "A" was for "Any modification to a basic vehicle after standardisation ("M" Designation).." B was for chassis modifications. The # is how many individual modifications were done. So this guy went through 3 mods from A2 to A5.
So I guess it really could be just about anything from engine to suspension to electronics....

Thanks for the info. I was supposed to haul the 992 but another driver get's to. With the A5 I'll have to guesstimate on where to place it on the trailer to get my axles some what legal. It could be the suspension because the spec sheet we get says it's 2.5 tons heavier. Anyway thanks again.

I did a bit more digging and could not find the A5 upgrade but here is the ugprade list for A1 to A2
The M992A2 upgrade was accomplished through a materiel change program. It includes all of the enhancements found in the A1 package and such features as an improved radiator; reinforced side-door sponson; final-drive quick disconnect; relocation of the personnel heater and hydraulic reservoir; and improvements to auxiliary power unit (APU) reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) criteria.

ok, I looked it up...

The M109A5 has a new gun tube...it is 2 inches longer than the tube on the A1-A4 versions. Overall weight has not changed as far as is noted.

Here is a link to the Army publication that addresses tiedowns and transporting via truck. It covers the M109 on an Army semi-trailer, but it should give a professional truck driver an idea of what to expect when tieing down an Army combat vehicle. I would like to second the question from dark star. This would indeed be a neat rig to convert.

I have all the technical manuals required for this vehicle. Don't know if they would be a help for scratchbuilding one though.

mostly looking for the measurements of the upper hull section...and door measurements...everything else looks pretty much staight forward an m109 hull
