I see Hannant's has the new JPz Kanone from Revell. Been looking forward to this one for a while - has anyone heard anything about whether it's any good?

Based on those sprues... gun seems too short on the kit, and a Eduard PE set would be welcome..

hannants.co.uk - even if you never buy anything, it's probably the handiest search function for what's available (apart from a few odd lines that they don't carry because someone else does instead).

The gun barrel does look a little short, doesn't it. Oh well, that can be easily fixed. Thanks guys for all the links and info. I've been a fan of this 'tank' since Tamiya came out with it in their Mini-Tank configuration in 1/48th. Talk about a basic kit!

There were a few prototypes with different types of tracks:

And count the number of road wheels on this one:

The barrel length looks longer too.

The version with 5 road wheels and three return rollers is the series version. It is based upon one of the "early" prototypes for the light tank family (That later became the Marder IFV, Roland SAM and TH301/TAM tank)

Lot's of pictures from a german website.

The model kit itself is not bad. It has some minor problems like

+ The Vinyl tracks are too soft/long and the linking pins are badly molded
+ The commanders hatch has (according to some sources) only 6 instead of 8 vision blocks (It has only six, I have to check a real Kanonenjäger to see if it has
+ Wheels only detailed on the outside
+ Hatches only detailed on the outside
+ Some hatches molded as part of the vehicle
+ Smoke launchers lack the small stabiliser legs

But the model has a lot of good sides too

+ Nicely detailed except for the above points
+ Easy to build with little to no putty needed (a minor gap right under the canon)
+ Very good fit, i.e. the tools fit without any glue
+ Good choice of material and color, easy to work
+ Road wheels use a "removeabel fixing pin" type design that would allow adapting the chassis to the ground
+ Can be build in the "Observation tank" variant too
+ The four-part design of the upper hull (could have been done as a one-part mold) hints at Revells plans to bring the Jaguar Missile tank(s) with their different side walls/front hull
+ Construction and painting plans are very well done and detailed

+ You need a VERY close up look on the commanders hatch to count vision blocks

Overall a very nice model "out of the box" with solid detailing and some space for improvements. I really enjoyed building it.

Indeed the German forums talk intensively about the completely wrong tracks and the incorrect amount of lenses of the commander's copula/hatch.

The track horns are wrong molded and placed.

This circumstance effectuated amongst most of the German modelers amazement and disappointment as this Jagdpanzer is absolutely new tooled and long awaited.

Meanwhile Perfect Scale offers corrected tracks and a upper hull

One should not over-value the "This is a bad model" calls IMHO and carefully check if the add-on parts are really needed. Even more so since the add-on tracks will need some re-work of the road wheels and/or return rollers to fit.

Oh and Tankograd has recently published a volume on the BW Jagdpanzers, both Gun and Missile from the HS-30 based ones to the last Jaguar-2 with improvements. While short on "Kanonenjäger" pictures, many details are shared between KaJaPa and the Jaguar (same basic hull etc)

Edit:

I just took a look at the original link and have two minor comments:

+ The production set is made from dark green plastic, not the white one shown in the pictures

+ The Web-Page has a minor error:

The KaJaPa replaced the M41 with the heavy companies and was later replaced by the M48 in some Jager units.

Regardless this kit is eagerly awaited on this side of the ocean. A good base for the Rakete versions and much cheaper option than the Elite Jaguar which I've got sitting on the shelf.

My replacement tracks from Perfect Scale Modellbau have just arrived and they look very nice. The open-ring guide horns are very delicate and a few have come adrift, so I'll be packing them carefully until I get around to using them (about 2048 at current rates of progress, and I don't mean ten to nine tonight ), but they look to be very much worth getting. Also the packaging was first-rate.

Is there a USA/North America distributor for Perfect Scale Modellbau?

This is model is my wish list. In 1979 I was in a jeep following a West German National Guard convoy with a Kanone in it. It was the first time I saw turn signals used on an armored vehicle (most NATO armored vehicles had them).

Marco, thanks for the link. They do not have the Kanone update kit, yet. I will keep a look out it on the site.

A bit off topic but:

I was recently at the WTS in Koblenz(1) and they had a nice video from the testing of the KaJaPa(2). In that video they also showed the KaJaPa on the "tank trail"(3) co-driving with a Stug-III and a Jagdpanther. So if one needs a "reason" to show the Kanonenjäger and some WWII assault guns together in the field, this would make for a nice display

Oh and the full name Jagdpanzer 4-5 is NOT a hint at the Jagdpanzer IV or Jagdpanzer V but just part of a wired naming sheme. There are also Jagdpanzer 1-3 (on HS-30) or Jagdpanzer 2-3 (on the Hotchkiss 11-2 base) etc.

(1) Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung => Collection for Studies on Military Technology, a Bundeswehr Collection of Military Gear from Pistols to MBT70, also open to the public

(2) Sadly the film is "for internal use only"

(3) Off road but with a somewhat prepared surface/well travelled road

Too bad. When you mention the MBT-70 and the Kanonenjäger together you've got my attention. I'd like to see something like this in a DVD someday.
