A thing like this coul be usefull for you?!?!
If the answer is "yes".....I've painted it in tamiya dark yellow...then I've applied some oils washes of black and light brown, probably if the wood area is more extense of mine you could do a highlight with the base color but in lighter version...and the you need to apply washes.
Hope this help

I would add that I use Faust's method with one addition. After I weather the pieces, I take 0000 Steel Wool and rub it on high use areas. I like the effect I get and will post some shots of my German pontoon bridge.

Faust's article is an excellent SBS for turning out realistic wood.
For me I usually use balsa wood. The grain is not great but it is easy to work with. I usually put in a basecoat of Flat brown (Vallejo) with some Grey to simulate weathered wood. I then go over this with an oil wash of Raw Umber. Then very lightly drybrush with a almost whitish grey mix of oils. Lastly I give the lower portions of the wood another raw umber wash for depth. Old wood depending on the wood type will eventually turn brownish grey when exposed to sun and rain.

I read a post a few years ago that suggested the same method and i have never looked back.
I had never considered dark yellow as a base and was amazed how simple it made a difference in the wood effect.
