Hey guys I got this kit at the same time as the willys jeep I posted a couple of weeks ago, started it then put it away for awhile. After seeing some of the great allied armor some of you guys have posted I decided to have another go at it.
I added the armor plates using some sheet styren for the hull and putty for the turret. I've come to find out afterwards that A3's did not normaly have the applique armor do to the wet stowage of the ammo.I also think that the welds might be a little bigger than I wanted
I scratch built the Cullin(did I spell that right) device out of plastic stock and added a little more detail to the travel lock.
The fifty cal. and cradle are frome the Acadamy US machine gun set.
The stowage is a combination of stuff that came with the kit and from Tamiyas Allied veh. stowage kit.
I shaved off all those nasty molded on hatch and engine deck handels and replaced them with ones made from copper wire.
Well let me know what ya all think . Any advice you guys give will be a big help for my next one Dragons M4A3E8. Just remember its my first so be gentle
(P.S. Just noticed the headlites, they will be delt with)

Hi Steve
First I'll congratulate you for going the extra effort no matter how misplaced as you stated yourself
You are right in that this particular Sherman does not have the additional applique armour plate, and the reason why not. That said, the kit is short of having the cast-in turret cheek armour on the right front side in front of the gunners position. (there should be no additional plate or thickening on the left side.) This is a more convoluted process, which I think DML have included in their M4A3E8 kit so the alteration is not necessary. One thing about your welds is that they should touch both hull and front edge of plate consistently. The trick is to apply the putty in an even flat angle, and then once approaching a cured state, add the individual weld marks. Also the plates were not welded on the underside
I love the effort with the Culin device! You have a keen eye there. A good amassing of stowage too! Maybe tone down the rope?
Overall I'd be quite proud of this first effort. You may find the DML M4A3E8 kit to be 6.45 times more difficult to build than Tamiya, but the clear concise instructions and easy great fitting parts are a Tamiya trait...
There is a current build of one by Per_Erik (stampede) which will 'prepare' you a little in the Constructive comments forum...
Cheers
Brad

Good build and painting, I like it a lot. Are the wheels from the Tamiya kit?

Looks pretty good for a First attempt better then mine was that is for sure.
Good job and ditto what has been said.
Nice job on the tracks also.
But one thing is drill those head lights out and use some MV lens will make a big difference.
Darn good job of painting the stowage and tools.
The rope is tad big try nylon one less fuzz.

I wasnt a big fan of the sherman (sorry all to all you shermie guys)but after doing this build and doing a lot more research on them I'm looking foward to starting on my Easy 8.I'm also picking up this Tamiya kit again and building it using all the suggestions and info I've picked up here.

Hey Steve,
Despite the inaccuracies of the turrret and hull side applique armour, you still have done a wonderful job on your M4A3.
The applique welds are a bit rough looking but still a commendable effort.
Cheers
