Hello Guys,
Just getting back into the hobby after an abscence of about 20 years....so hello to you all.
I was wondering if anyone has any links to some good tutorials on figure painting basics.
Thanks for your help.
James

Any particular medium?
Have a browse through KitMaker's figure site, Historicus Forma (click the link or use the Switch Sites drop down at the top of the page).
The forums contain many hidden gems, and there are plenty of informative features

Hey James,
No worries, glad you find the site useful - that's what we're here for, mate
Nothing wrong with starting on Tamiya paints. You're using the acrylics? Some folks will tell you they're not great to work with, yet others have no problem with them. I've seen some excellent work with them. I say work with whatever you have available
Enjoy HF, and don't be afraid to post your work, we were all beginners once and we're here to help you

James, based on my own experience I can recommend following two Osprey’s modeling books. Don’t get discouraged by the fact they both deal with a specific subject, the demonstrated techniques are generally applicable.
Modelling Waffen-SS Figures (Calvin Tan)
Modelling Fallschirmjager Figures (Jaume Ortiz Forns, Daniel Alfonsea Romero)
Both demonstrate painting with acrylics paints (faces, uniforms, camouflage). Forn’s/Romero’s book shows typical techniques with highlights and shadows application. Tan’s book presents different technique using black base coat.

James,
I also own both those books and heartily recommend them. You should be able to find reviews of them here on Armorama.
As Ales said, look beyond the subjects to the techniques displayed
