Work continues on the Dragon M4A3E8… Ive done the filters, wash, and drybrushing on the tank itself as preliminary steps toward final weathering, and installed the tracks (which still need some work). While I was painting the base, I hit the lower areas of the Sherman with the same color for the start of dust effects.
The base is getting painted. This is the first time ive tried gluing down everything, and painting everything a dark grey, then using the airbrush to start painting the rubble, wall, street, etc. At first things didn’t look right, but now as I detail out more colors and weather more, its starting to look right. The bashed in 55gal drum is a piece of aluminum foil, folded 3 times (for thickness), and then embossed over a plastic oil drum. Takes a bit of patience, but once removed from the “master”, it can be dented, ripped, and peppered with holes just like a real metal can.

Photobucket
Here is some more details ill be adding as I build up clutter and debris…the box was made from art paper, cut and folded (to be half under the tank treads, crushed), and the newspaper was found from an interenet image search, scaled down and printed.

Photobucket
I need to turn some attention to the natural ground areas behind the Sherman, then attach the Sherman to the base, some stowage, crew figures, and final details and weathering.
Comments welcome!

Great work!
You really did a better sherman easy 8 than me. I posted my sherman several days ago but I found out it suffered big suspension problem, I made a lot of mistake when build the HVSS. Your work is nice so far but I think there should be more weathering effect and I will wait and see your final work.
One problem, what color do you use to paint the sherman?

Cheers,

Lu, Yuan

Lu, thanks for the comments. I saw your sherman, and it really wasnt bad at all...yes, some mistakes on the suspension, but you have talent and the basic skills, so dont worry. you could always later make a diorama with your sherman wading through a river to hide the suspension issues!

I will be weathering it further, and adding stowage. Final weathering will be done with the tank attached to the base, as this keeps me from holding the tank, and blends it in with the ground work.

The color is a base coat of Floquil "Pulman Green" (a very dark green), which was oversprayed with Model Master Olive Drab, then highlighted with Model Master "faded olive drab". Decals were added, then a coat of Future floor wax (Acrylic clearcoat) After that had fully dried I used oil paint and blended in spots of white, yellow, burnt sennia, and green. Let that dry, then a wash of very dark brown, and a light drybrushing of a light greenish tan. All of that gives what you see so far.

DJ, due you mean the intact one or the dented one?

the dented one so far just has the base coat of Floquil Grimy Black (which was sprayed on the whole base), a spray of Model Master "Rust", and then a few washes of brown/black oil paint. More will be done to it with some pigments and drybrushing

The intact one came out of the spares box already painted (by me many many moons ago). It had a base coat of panzer grey, then i used Model Master "Rust", Military Brown, and some oranger paint (maybe a diffrent brands "Rust" color?). A wash of dark brown finished it off. For this project, I wanted to add some color, so some light blue was "chipped" on using a small brush on the top and bottom bands, and German uniform grey for the middle one. Im going to go back with my rust colors again and add some more spots and such, then some pigments to rust it up a little without distroying the color.

What's in the behind? 234/3?

almost, its a 234/4. Dragon kit with the cyber hobby upgrade and a few scratchbuilt details. After the sherman its next on the list for a base. Im thinking having it climbing onto a raised road from a low area, complete with a culvert and some water/mud.
It got put on temp hold while I finish the sherman, and because I must have droped a stowage bin lid on the ground where our 7 month old puppy found it and chewed it pretty good...at least is a flat peice and I can make from card again!

thanks for the comments!!

Looking good so far Andy, lots of little things to draw the eye. The barrel is ingenious and a nice touch.
