I am trying to find figures for a few Dioramas I have planned but am unsure if I can use anything other than specific DAK kits. Did soldiers in North Africa wear the same uniforms as in Europe? Did they dye them a different color (tan or Khaki)? I have seen DAK in shorts but it seem there are allot more choices for figures that are not specific to North Africa.
I guess what I am asking is can I paint a non DAK uniformed soldier in DAK colors or would a soldier in North Africa wear a field grey uniform? I want to be somewhat accurate in painting my figures. I had painted a morotcycle rider (from Tamyia Orderly set) and then was told:

The jacket of the motorcycle rider is actually a camouflage smock so should probably have one of the many WH or SS camouflages on it.

Anyway thanks in advance for the info.

Hey Kevin,
This site may be of some help:
http://www.AFRIKAKORPS.org/ Unlike the poor bastards on the Eastern Front in 1941-42, the DAK troops were issued theater appropriate uniforms.
While most photos show troops wearing tropical uniforms, some soldiers were photographed wearing European kit, i.e. wool greatcoats, in cool weather or night time when temperatures in the desert dropped.
While not commonly worn, camouflage smocks were worn by elite units like the Hermann Goring Division or paratroop units.
Osprey's "Afrika Korps 1941-43" is a good source of photos and colour prints of typical uniform types.
Cheers
