Hi Tony,

Dragon do a "must have" set of Modern US Marines wearing desert camo. The figures are not the latest Gen2 creations but are good nonetheless. Unfortunately they are quite difficult to get hold of. Tamiya do a modern US Soldier set, but the figures need some work to bring them up to scratch.

Modern British Soldiers (in styrene) are rarer than rocking horse poo. Again, Dragon once did a set but I suspect it's out of production. Figures in resin are easier to come by, notably Accurate Armour do a whole range of figures but can be quite pricey. Check on the web for other producers, Blast Models I think do some very good US figures. There are more producers out there but we have all been asking for more styrene British figures for a long time.

Good luck, AndyC.

I have a Dragon set titled "World's Elite Forces Series - British Desert Rats" - kit no. 3013. It contains four 1:35 scale figures of modern British infantry. The box art even has a Warrior in the background. I plan on using this kit for a diorama featuring Academy's Warrior I'm in the middle of constructing now. I picked it up at my local hobby shop about a year ago. The copyright date on the box is 1992. I've placed two photos of the box art on the Member's Photos section of the KitMaker.net gallery. If you'd like me to post photos of the sprues, please let me know and I'll do that.

I can't remember the exact kit name but Dragon also did a set of 1st Infantry soldiers form Desert Storm. It's the only set I know of in plastic that has the soldiers in ther NBC suits(but not their masks) like we did when crosed into Iraq.

It depends on how modern you are looking for.

The only current(ish), OIF/OEF (about '03) figures in plastic are the Dragon Modern Marines (which can depict Army soldiers too, no real difference). They have Interceptor Body (IBA) and MOLLE gear. The rest of Dragon's Moderm figures are from Desert Storm era ('90-'91) timeframe. They are good figures to convert though. By swapping out the torsos w/those from the Modern Marine sets, you can have any number of poses.

The Tamiya Modern US Army figures were modern in '83 when they first came out. They are far from it now. Their gear and most of the weapons have been replaced with newer items. They are scrawny and soft on setail as well. I would leave them alone. The only good things in the kit are some weapons and gear for '80s to early '90s soldiers.

The Dragon British Desert Rats kit is also from ODS. Current web gear and uniforms are slightly different. Accurate Armor has some good modern Brit troopers in resin. Verlinden has some so-so ones too.

There are lots of modern soldiers in resin.

Blast has some good ones.

Verlinden's are so-so again, with lots of older items mixed in with some new ones. They tend to recycle parts of kits often, such as gear and weapons.

Hobby Fan (AFV Club's resin side) has some excellent modern figures. They are the only ones to have figures in ACUs as well, truely modern.

There are other resin sets out there too that are pretty good.

Good luck.

as suggested accurate armour make some nice modern british figs. As for the dragon desert rat set, there is occasionnally a set on ebay, however their only limitation is that they are all wearing their NBC (now CBRN) suits which unfortunately limits their usage really to the start of the gulf war. Trumpeter has a couple of very nice kits, but be leary of the U.S.2005 kit.
It's actully a great set of figures, but a little under scale, even compared to their other figures.
I have used them, but kept them a safe distance from other figures.
It's a good kit even for just the parts with seperate hands, feet and two sets of torsos.
Also photo etched head sets for communication..
Sprue Brothers has a good supply and I highly recommend this site for their service and knowing what your going to pay in your countries dollar.
