Acav (or anyone), do you know, what were New Zealand's last tanks? I know they sent some artillery and M113s to Vietnam. I'm just curious to know.

New Zealand didn't have M113's in Vietnam.
I think the last tank NZ fielded was the M41 Walker Bulldog.
Cheers Jason

Hi jphillips,
Just going of the top of my head, with a bit of help from HERE People can correct me if I am wrong. The last 'tanks' we had were (I think) M-41's, They were replaced by Scorpions in 1983, Not too sure when they went out of service, but it was in the late 1990's? possibly. The M113's were replaced by NZLAVIII's in 2003. Just a side note, I am pretty sure we didn't send any M113's to Vietnam, the pictures you see of Kiwi troops are with Aussie M113's. Once I could be wrong though.
Hope that helps.

Greetings jphillips;
both Andy and Jason are right.
The last "tank" in service with the NZ Army was the Scorpion, they were retired in 1998.
The last real tank we had was the M41, in service from 1960 to 1983.
The only other tanks we have had in service in NZ were:
Centurions, 1955 - 1968
Valentine, 1941 - 1960, and
M3 Stuart, 1942 - 1955
As for Vietnam we sent Artillery, Engineers, Infantry incl. SAS and a Medical team. There were RNZAC personal attached to the Australian APC Squadron.
I hope this is of some help.
cheers
David
Nearly forgot New Zealand's other tank

Very interesting picture of the Bob Semple tank. Now there is a challenging scratchbuilding project.

David,
I'm saddened to hear that your country has retired its armor. The NZLAVs are pretty cool too, I think. But maybe someday New Zealand will have tanks again.
I have to say, the camo scheme on those New Zealand Scorpions is pretty colorful.

The New Zealanders operated one Armoured Brigadein Italy which was armed with mainly M4A2 Shermans and M4 105 alongside Vc and 1c Fireflies. They also operated Valentines in the Solomons (SWPA) during WW2. NZ (and Aust) crews served on British Centurians during the Korean War to gain experience on the type which had been selected to replace their earlier tanks (Stuarts) still in service.
Cheers

Thanks Al for the info. I knew about the New Zealand Armoured Brigade in Italy, didn't know about their Pacific armour. You learn something new everyday

Many thanks for the condolences. But in reality New Zealand's Army is not large enough to support a real tank unit. I will leave it at that, enough said.
Darryl;
I was only referring to tanks used within New Zealand, I an sorry if I did not make that clear and then I forgot one
Tank, Infantry, Mk II, Matilda IV C. S., we used 36 between 1942 and 44 before selling them to Australia, only half having their guns. The other 18 3-in guns were used for our C.S. Valentines. I believe the Australians did not know the tanks were de-gunned, until they were unloaded. So much for NZ/Australia relationships
I one were to take into account the AFVs used by NZ Armed Forces both in NZ and overseas there are well over 40 different types.
cheers
David
