While working on my last model, I was trying to find something to replicate the pads and cushions found around hatches, etc. in armor vehicles. After many, many attempts #:-) and failures, I finally hit on the idea of styrofoam egg cartons. They can be cut into strips (to whatever scale) and then cut to the size needed for the pad. They bend easily and accept paint well. In addition, once painted, they look like the real "plastic/simulated canvas" covered pads. I'm sure this would work for other mediums, ie. aircraft, as well.

Hope this gives other of you some ideas.

Interesting idea, Dave. I might have to try that.

I have made padding and cushions from epoxy putty (Milliputt) and also by layering masking tape (build up layers until it is the proper thickness, then cut with a sharp blade and place on model).

I've always used putty too, but I think I'll give this a try, I like the idea of texture
