So I've decided I want to properly get back into modeling. When I was a kid I threw together a few 1/72 kits and I a few years ago I jumped into 1/35.
I love the detail on 1/35 but the kits consume to much limited space and as I can't afford an airbrush and a compressor they were difficult to paint by hand.
I was thinking of going back to 1/72 but then I started noticing the 1/48 kits around. I'm just not sure how large 1/48 kits are.
Could anyone give me an indication of the size? Maybe a pic of a kit beside a coin or even beside the other two scales for comparison. It would be a great help.
Thanks.

Hi
I believe if you do a search you'll find scale rules available which you can print out provided on some internet sites. You could then print out both and compare.
I think the difference is roughly 1/48 is three quarters the size of it's 1/35 counterpart but I've no 1/48 stuff to directly compare.

The 1/48th scale kit is about three quarters as big as a 1/35th scale kit (if the larger scale were 1/36th, 1/48th would be exactly three quarters the size). Maybe this will help. In 1/35th, a 5'10" man stands exactly two inches tall. In 1/48th, a 6' man stands exactly one and a half inches tall. In 1/72nd, a 6' man is one inch tall.

Hi
I did a little drawing in my CAD program to help you visualise it, but as both Gerald and I said it's three quarters. A simple 3 x 2 metre rectangle
Hope this link works

The other important factor to look at is selection. Me, I prefer modern stuff, and there is plenty available in 1/35th scale. I've never looked at what's out there in 1/48. Like yourself, I don't have a airbrush and everything is done by hand. Most modern kits are now very detailed and with weathering & washes can be done very nice by hand, for example, one of my more recent efforts:

That is a nice collection but how do you keep the dust off of them all?

Hello, I like the idea of 1/72 for saving space and dioramas but the pieces are VERY small to handle. 1/48 has good detail right out of the box and if you want more detail, Hauler has a PE set for just about everything including some conversion kits. Voyager, Aber, and some others also do PE. The only modern kit just newly released is the 1/48 Tamiya Hummer, so maybe more will follow soon from Tamiya. There are Resin modern kits in 1/48, such as Abrams, M113, some others. See Track48.com for a gallery of subjects from WWI, WWII, Modern, etc.

So how does everyone keep the dust off your finished kits and diorama's? (That's a great one there Greg) I know some people use glass display cases but alot don't seem to.

Well, that stinks. Unless I can find someone that only wants the Stealth.

About every 6 months they get a going over with a soft make-up brush. That does the job. Bit of a pain doing the planes, but a lot cheaper and takes up less space than glass cases.

That Tie is Lego scale: bottom shelf is the son's.
But I do have both 1/72 Fine Molds Tie's (and x-wing, Slave 1, y-wing, a-wing and a load of BSG stuff) I keep 1/72 for Sci-Fi

Here's more for anyone interested:
