Born in Wolverhampton in 1911; Leonard Phipps moved to devon in his youth, settling in the steadily growing town of Barnstaple,
Len enlisted At Barnstaple on 24/11/1938, in the supplimentary reserves, for four years as a "enlisted Mechanic."

Firstly serving in the R.a.o.c and then moving onto the R.e.m.e

This is Len

now, i wish to portray, Len, and his Three main vehicles.

the bulids will be in (almost) chronological order,
the first build i will hope to do is the above portrait of Len sitting on the back of his Truck.
this will be for Our Auntie Daisy, Who was 97 recently, unfortunatly, her husband Leonard , Died before i was born, They never talked about the war. When mentioned Len would get irritable, wich is understandable, we do not know how envolved with combat he was, but 2 Aqquired German daggers gives a small hint.
on the back of this picture is written " To my darling Daisy "
I am hoping to Shine a small light into her life, once again in the form of her husband. I Do not mean to bring back bad memories, But Memories akin to when she recieved this photograph. and the many telegraphs of reassurance when she feared the worst.

there are a few telegraphs i have of family members corresponding here, "still no news of Len"
and one From Len saying "meet me at the train station on the 30th"

i will need to find, a figure and heads that represent Len in this picture as closely as possible, i will mave a copy of the picture and possibly "to my darling Daisy " etched onto a brass or silver plate. i will also need the rear end of the truck, so if anyone can identify the truck. and to confirm, please can someone name the vehicles above so i dont get mixed up.
i belive they are all 15 cwt variants.

i have found this site, that may be my link to the modddeling side of the Reme.

Thanks im gonna need the luck in finding out the proper names, and models of the vehicles, as i believe, they are all 15cwt variants, confirmed are the morris 15cwt, (im not sure if the link abouve supplies the right ,kit its missing a tarp!) by ?Lead sled? being a resin and whitemetal kit.
the second kit i have found is the kit Alan is converting at the moment,
The Italeri Chevvy 15cwt Italeri
this looks correct, although i am possibly planning two of these, a dio of the towing in th efield below, and a little scene of the truck (with a bike attatched to the front bar) in a french/German street.
The third vehicle is the Humber 15 cwt well i think its that , if anyone can correct me here please do, wich i have not found a kit for.
and lastly is the truck in the small picture im not sure what truck this is so all help is appreciated, and if anyone has a rear end of this truck that they dont need, please let me know.

Mark Thanks for the reply,
all other research on the vehicular side has turned up,
1). Dust
2). an old cobweb

Ill take a look at those figures striaght away, ill also check for revies and stuff, i work much better with resin for reasons unknown, but im gonna have a good peek anyways, and if i dont find something close it will be a close fit!

well a sort of update on researching, i emailed hornet and wolf, asking if there was a look alike head, and if i would be able to purchase a set eclusively of that head,
i got my email barck from Roger Saunders just a minute ago, stating that he no longer does commisions, and cannot split up the pre determined sets, and indicated for me to purchase a standard set, wich to be honest, isnt my intention.(unless i can get some comparitivly cheap, or if someone has a spare look alike head.
not getting downhearted. im still trying to find out what truck len is sitting on. any ideas?

Hi Jimmy

Well the first vehicle, and I'm by no means up on Allied stuff, looks like a Morris CS8 truck. Scale Link do a model of it but it's resin etc. and carries a price tag of £48.93 +vat. If you think it looks like the right truck maybe someone does a cheaper version.

Morris CS8

Scroll down the page and you'll see it, item LS3507

I think the second on is the Chevy 15cwt recently re released by Italeri which another Alan is converting with a Plus Model set. to a radio truck, you know the build you've posted on the thread.

I think the third one with the name on is a Bedford. Again on the same Scale Link page scroll down past the Morris till you get to LSAA3514 Bedford MW 15CWT Truck, second from last item. It looks to have a similar bonnet shape., and sadly a similar price. Again check around to see if anybody does this in a cheaper version.

I reckon you'd be better just taking one vehicle to base this idea one, and with limited funds my choice would be the Italeri Chevy.

I know you want to be as accurate as you can but I doubt your relative will be as much of AFV enthusiast as we are and it will be the "personal" touch that will be important to her. The thing she makes the connection with, not in the model itself but the detail. All be it how you construct the diorams for example with an inset piece with a copy of the photograph, or a copy of his signature, any message etc. nicely printed and laminated. Or even a space to mount his medals should they be available or she consents to including them.

Anyway, must go loads of work to do.

Sorry

I missed the first smaller image of Len on the back of a truck. That could be almost anything given the amount showing and my statement remains that your relative won't know anymore than you what it is or should be. So choose what is available.

Do a Google image search. this is what I came up with on the last one by putting in Bedford MW 15cwt truck. Got to be the same, check out the distinctive shape on the mudguards front edge, just visible in your pic.

Hello Alan, just as i thought,
i know im on a buget, but i think, for myself that eventually i will get the scale link kits in the future, in fact, i have the medals in a display case myself, i was thinking of mounting the medals, but my woodwork is sub par, so im gonna stick to the photograph, i dont want to leave the base to big, so for price at the moment i think i will lean towards the italeri kit, but im thinling of using only the rear, for space reasons,
is it ethical to cut a kit in half, ?

for fun reasons i have just got to do the chevvy in the field witht he horses, i have a pic or tw of it in motion somwhere looks like it was proper fun!

thanks for your help alan, i just hope i can pull this off,
application off to currys tomorrow, hopefully ill get this!

Hi

Yes in the figure modelling world its quite common to cut a section off off a kit and only use part of it. I think, I'm not sure, they call it a "wedgie" probably a bit different to what that means to you

Heck I've seen in one magazine a modeller cut away a tank so that only the front couple of feet of the corner was used.

Just got to ensure the composition is "balanced" (along with the truck by the sounds of it )

I tell a lie, it wasn't the corner but a round section out of a Tiger 1. I first saw it as a featured article in Model Magazine internationl but here is the guy, Robert Dopp's web site with some images

Tiger section with figure

Ola Jimmy

I think the whole scene would look the best when you take the Italeri 15 CWT and cut it in half. If you want a scene where the point of focus is the figure that is. Problem with using a whole figure and a whole vehicle is that the point of focus changes to the vehicle since it is the biggest part of the dio. When cutting a truck in half you keep the base smaller and the focus remains on the figure. Instead of a vehicle it becomes a backdrop. Just cut it right behind the axles to the front so the half of the vehicle can be pinned down by it's wheels.
I think it will look pretty stunning.
As for it being it ethical to cut a kit in half... I'd say no worries mate... it is often a lot more interesting too
