What did the Germans use to pull around the Flak 88? I'm getting the kit for my birthday and I was wondering what would look right pulling the thing around? The box shows an 8 ton half track pulling it but I can't seem to find any for sale. Did Tamiya discontinue them? I guess I could hook it up to a sherman and call it a really big war prize. Thanks for any help.

The Sdkfz 7 (TAM 35148) towed them and yes, Tamiya has discontinued production

I've seen photos of the 88 being pulled by the 8ton 1/2 track. I bet you can check out ebay for the 8 ton,a famo would work.
Couldn't find anything else towing it

Joe,

Tamiya had two different kits of the Sd.Kfz7. The first was motorized and was Kit Number 33. The second was not motorized and was Kit Number 148 or Item 35148. You can actually connect the 88mm Gun to the hitch of both kits.

You can tell the difference from the cover box art and the size of the box if you see it on eBay and they don't tell you which is which. Kit Number 33 (motorized) is a longer box and shows the panzer grey 8 ton semitrack pointing left with the top up.

Kit Number 148 shows the camoflaged dark yellow 8 ton semitrack pointing right with the top down.

You should be able to get the motorized one for about $35.00 - $45.00 US and the non-motorized one for about $25.00 - $35.00 US.

Make sure to get one with a sealed box - just so you know that all the parts are there.

Hope this helps, GR8Voyager

Ebay is the best shot you have of finding one. Some old hole in the wall hobby shop might still have one, you probably could find one at an area Model show/contest

Hi there
As someone has said Ebay is probably your best bet for an SDKFZ 7, but beware the last one i saw on there went £58 (almost $100).It depends on how desperate you are for the kit

We recently had a discussion on this topic at one of our club meetings. I was asking about a Famo towing the 88 as a diorama and the general agreement was that a Famo would not have towed an 88 as it was used for tank recovery and other heavy work.

I have a photo for the Deustch Afrika Korps website showing an Panzer II towing an 88 so I think that is the direction my dio will take.

Hi D.

Sorry, those puppies wouldn't have the horses to pull an 88.

You need one of the big half tracks. And pulling an 88 with a Famo would be unlikely because tank recovery vehicles have better things to do, and would be in different units (as mentioned above).

It seems strange that Tamiya would make the 88mm available without bringing the Sdkfz 7 back into production. No doubt by the time the 8 ton returns, the 88 will be impossible to find

Hey Joe,
Rather disconcerting to hear that Tamiya isn't making that particular half-track anymore. I managed to get mine back when I was in 8th grade or so...and I think I got the 88 mm gun afterwards.

I honestly don't know if I have the motorized version or not...I'd have to check. But I have the hafl-track (painted in camo) and the 88 gun still..I'd be plenty happy to send you a pic of both, if you're interested.

"...we're gonna go through him like crap through a goose!"

That would be my luck. Maybe I need to buy an extra 88 and keep it for when I can find an 8 ton half track. How often does tamiya rerelease kits that they discontinue? What color did they paint the 88's that were at normandy?

I am sure the SWS cargo version, as done by Italeri, would work just fine for now, until Tamiya re-releases the SdKfz 7 cargo version.
