Hi guys,

I'm after some general information on the Sherman M4 Mk I DV. I have the formations hull and wanted to know what you thought might be the best donor kit. Also any general infomation as to when and which British Units used these would be good.

Track type and suspension for earlier and later periods would also help.

Many thanks

Al

It really doesn't matter as you are really after the Lower hull. They were used almost entirely by US forces and mostly in Tunisia and possibly Italy. They were in abundance in the US for training and many colourful schemes exist. Other than test vehicles I cannot ever recall seeing a Brit DV M4 - I won't rule one out but I just can't recall ever seeing one. It becomes harder becuase most of the US based ones were rebuilt and delivered to NWE with Applique etc over the Hood fronts as Attrition replacements. If any of these made there way to the Brits at that time they would have been Diverted to Firefly production as they were short of M4's for this and the M4A4 was no longer avail.
If you are going to do an early US one in Tunisia (quite colourful) then you want an eearly turret and mantlet
Cheers

Hi Al,

There is a pic on page 70 British Tanks in Normandy IWM B6642 of a DV belonging to 33rd Armoured Brigade. As they mainly had M4s and M4A1's and Hybrids I though it might be an M4.

Could be a Mk III or Mk V - any thoughts?

Thanks again,

Al

Hi Guys,

Anyone any thoughts on this one, ie could it be a M4 Mk I DV or is it a M4A4 Mk V DV

Hull length looks too short to be a Mk V but I know that's the most likey:

Pic from IWM for reference only:

Caption reads:

British Sherman tanks, moving forward near Lebisey Wood for the assault on Caen, pass another tank and crew waiting for the order to advance.

Thanks

Hi Guys,

Well although the one above has been confirmed as a Mk V, never say never and some more infomation turned up on ML.

http://www.network54.com/Forum/47208/thread/1224274945/M4+Sherman+Mk+I+DV+Hull+Question-

So I should be OK with a British version.

From bigger antane base and the weld seam between DR & RO hoods,it's no double a Sherman V. British used some Baldwin M4 with DV hoods but do have applique armor. Early M4 DV is rare in British service. Sherman III DV is more common and early M4 DV mostly delivered to US Army.
