I don't know much about modern tanks, could you modern guys please tell me what this tank is? And does any company make one in plastic?

Trumpeter makes several versions of the Type 59. I can not attest to their accuracy or quality, I have not built them.

Like Gary said..."Out of the box, no company makes a good kit of it."
Trumpeter does have a couple versions, but they are very poor quality. It will sort of look like a Type 59, but be lacking details and is not accurate at all. Go with a Tamiya T55 and convert it. I'm not sure what is reaquired to convert it, but it can't be that difficult. It is simply a Chinese copy of the Russian T54.

I know Tamiya does a T-55A kit, but I never knew they also have a T-54 kit out now.
Of course from what I've heard, Trumpeter does a good kit of the Chinese Jiefang 6x6 truck kit, also used in the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident, if that helps. (Also, Eduard does a PE set for the Soviet ZIL truck, but I don't know if it would also work for the Jiefang, of which it is a near-copy.)

Thanks, guys. I was asked about building it, but I'm not sure how much detail and accuracy is wanted. Or even if he is serious about me building it for him.

Whoops, finger slip or not enough coffee. Fixed it.
I have seen a dio of the Tiananmen Square tank standoff before. I don't know what model he used, but it looked good. Of course, I can't find a pic of it now. I think it was in FSM.
