Hello all,

Here are some photos of my DML Jagdtiger which has been base coated Tamiya Dark yellow (XF-60). I added an Armorscale barrel, Eureka tow cables and Modelkasten tracks.

I plan on finishing it in overall Dunkelgelb using the kit decals (number 323).

I am ready to proceed with the finishing and weathering and want to expand my weathering techniques. I am seeking suggestions as to exactly what to do step by step at each phase. All suggestions are appreciated. Let's do one phase at a time and I will post photos of my progress.

OK guys, what would you do next? Thanks.

Matt

Hello Batman,

"I plan on finishing it in overall Dunkelgelb..."

In this case I recommend you to choose an other color for the base coat: Some kind of brown eg. XF-10 'Flat Brown' or XF-64 ''Redbrown'.

Then apply your favourite main color Dunkelgelb thinnly without covering the (new) basecoat completely, especially edges and lines.

Take care to let shine the base coat slightly through the main coat.

Next step is to mix the main coat Dunkelgelb with color tones which are more or less similar to yellow e.g. lighter brown tones like "XF-57 Buff" or other yellow colors e.g "XF-59 desert yellow".

Apply again these mixes very thinnly and try not to cover completely the other color coats.

Then I would mix the main color Dunkelgelb with" XF-2 White" and spray that highlighted Dunkelgelb (thinnly) on greater areas like the frontal glacis plates of the hull, the side and top plates of the "turret".

If you make this step again successfully you will see nice effects of contrast.

If you want to emphasize these contrast effects caused by your pre-shading you can (only if you like) work out this with a post-shading: Darken the brown colors you used with "XF-1 Flat Black" and mix it with thinner to a ratio of ca. 10:90.

Apply this high-thinned color again on edges and along lines like the Schürzen.

To go on with breaking up the monochromating effect I advise you to add some macro filters.

This time you use again the colors you mixed before with Dunkelgelb BUT THIS TIME you use thinner only.

Ratio approx. 10:90 / 20:80 (very, very thin).

Spray this colored thinner partially over the model.

How often you execute this technique and which color you use depends on the effect you like to have.

These described steps are the main techniques I recommend you to start with primarily before other steps like washing, dry-brushing etc. do follow we can talk about in the later process - if you want.

Thanks for your replies.

Marco,

I have gone ahead and applied a coat of Tamiya Red Brown (XF-64) to everything. I will apply the light overspray of Dark Yellow tomorrow or over the weekend. I will then follow that up with the Dark Yellow lightened with Buff then again lightened with White.

Thanks.

Matt

Thanks James.

Marco,

I sprayed the dark yellow over the red brown and didn't quite get the effect you mentioned. A little of the brown shows through here and there but for the most part I ended up almost where I started with nearly a solid dark yellow base coat. I have done this "Cloud Pattern" on other models but had a difficult time on this one for some reason.

I am going to lighten it with the dark yellow/buff combination then the dark yellow/white.

I will post photos after I lighten the base coat.

Hello Matt,

do not worry about what you see so far.

You will get the mentioned contrast effect during the highlight process and - if this is not sufficient - a post-shading.

Looking forward to your pics.

Here is an update.

On Marco's recommendation, I mixed Tamiya Dark Yellow (XF-60) with Buff (XF-57) and sprayed it lightly over the base coat leaving the edges in dark yellow. I then mixed Dark yellow and White (XF-2) and sprayed a light coat in the middle of the panels.

The effect is subtle and helps to break up the monotonous overall dark yellow base coat. Thanks Marco.

What would you guys do next?

Hello Matt,

I am glad about that you are satisfied with the effects you have reached so far.

For the next step following article might be helpful and interesting for you

Matt, Maybe it's only pictures but I'm afraid that this very subtle shading will disappear while further paint/weathering job. I would suggest to make it with bigger difference. Just my 3 cents.

Thanks Marco & Spit.

I don't want to spray any more paint as I am starting to get a bit of grainess here and there and don't want to make it worse.

Typically at this point I would apply avery diluted wash overall of Ivory Black oil paint thinned with mineral spirits to begin the weathering process and to eliminate the "newness" of the paint. I then gloss coat using Tamiya clear (X-22), then apply the decals.

I am going to experiment on a test piece with some browns (raw umber, etc) for the overall wash instead of the black and see how that goes.

Good luck Matt, hope to see more pics soon.

BTW there is something I wonder all the time: I assume you are assembling the DML-kit 6285 - so the track mounting rope have not been included, or am I wrong?

Marco,

It's actually one of the older releases I purchased from a friend for $10.00 . I am at work and don't have the kit number available. I was able to purchase the fenders directly from Dragon.

The kit included the mounting hardware for the track mounting cable. I purchased the Eureka Kingtiger tow cable set which is what you see on the vehicle.
