Now that I have the picture up.... Any comments or facts about the protective hatch covers? Were the Japs trying that hard to get into the tanks?

most of the hatch covers I've seen were to keep bombs off of the tanks surface, lessening the effect.

In a word yes, Japanese soldiers were fanatical in their attacks. You can read about tanks "hosing" one another off with machine gun fire. Frankly the hatch protection on that Sherman is nothing, there are photos of USMC Shermans with dozens of nails welded to the hatches, points up.
