I hope someone out there can help?
I am after photos of the Vietnam War Guntruck 'Sopwith Camel' I know there are some in the 1st volume of The Hard Ride but sadly I can't get hold of that book. I have searched the internet with out luck, so I'm hoping one or more of you kind people out there might have a photo or two that they wouldn't mind sharing.
The reason I ask is that I'm currently building a model of it using an old broken model of the AFV Club 'Nancy' Guntruck and the Hobby Fan conversion kit.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Cheers
David

There is only one photo of this truck in the Hard Ride. I check with some of my Brothers on the Gun Truck site and we can't find any more photos of this truck. I am trying to find some of the crew that may have served on it. If I can find someone I will try to connect you with them.

This truck was painted a dark green. We would mix the OD with Black paint to make it dark. It also did not have the trade mark yellow nose in it. This came after the camel was destroyed in late 1968. The truck was assigned to the 444 Truck Compay of the 8th Group, 27 Trans Bn.

Dave and Pascal,
Thanks for looking into the photo issue for me it's much appreciated, and Pascal I really like the weathering you've done on your Sopwith Camel.
I have a few questions that you might be able to answer from the photo in The Hard ride, if you don't mind.
Firstly did it have the canvas roof over the cab? The Hobby Fan kit shows it on but Jim Lewis's model is without.
Is there a jerry can on the tread plate by the drivers door? Pascal and Jim have it there on their models but Hobby Fan not.
Would the round reflectors on the truck bed be orange?
What is the correct colours for the rear tail lights (is it like a M113 with just the red on the left side?) and small lights on the front fenders?
And finally is there a white stripe along the side of the front fenders and the bottom edge of the side of the truck bed?
Sorry to bug you with more questions it won't be the best model ever by a long way but I just wanted to get it as close to correct as I can.
Cheers

Hi,

I have build my model more similar as possible with the Camels Hard Ride pics. Jerry an, white strips, canvas roof, and so on are on the truck on the pic.
Take a look on you mail box.

For the light colos take a look on the Prime Portal site here. Its a modern M35A2 difference from the Nam truck are the rear lights forms and the front one that are a little differents.

Regards

Yes all the trucks had canvas tops. Most of the time we took the tops off. Some times if it was during the monsoons we put them back on. Up to the driver. The truck is the M 35 A1 which had the exhaust running along the right side under the bed. and had the small lights. the rear tail lights had the red lens on the left side and the black out lens on the right rear. The M35 kit of the Nancy had the correct parts to make the proper model. From what we have told by the members of the 444th the truck had white stripes along the front fenders and along the bottom of the cargo bed. And the round reflectors were a Orange on the front and front side of the cargo bed. The rear and rear sides were red.. Make sure when you place the white star on the hood (Bonnet) of the truck, the the point faces forward to the front of the truck.

Pascal - the US National Insignia's direction on the Hood changed in the mid-1950's, with the regulation having units position a point of the star to face in the direction of vehicle travel. Throughout the 1950's and early 1960's, you can see examples of both positioning as some vehicles were done in accordance with the older style, but by the time of "Sopwith Camel's" service in the Vietnam War, the star's position on the Hood is just as Dave stated.

No it is backwards. I know the instruction from the model say to place it like you have but that is how they were prior to Vietnam. We "pointed" the way with the star.
