Hey guys!!!

I am starting on my third armor model, Academy's Tiger I "winter of 1944."
Although not very accurate, it will prove to be an excellent practice platform for later Tigers. Anyway, after some research I am going to model this after S13 of Das Reich around the third battle of Kharkov around Feb 1943. I've started on the figures and here is my progress so far:

I used Tamiya's white putty to fill in the gaps between each leg on the front and the backside of each figure, as well as the gaps on their shoulders.

Not academy no. They are Mini Art. They were included in the kit as part of a "special edition" label...nothing special but it only cost 20,000 Won so i was all for this kit!

New pics:

Meet the crew, left to right, Alfred, Helmut, Johan, Karl, und Felix.

I had to sand off 4 reverse puch out marks, they stuck out instead of pushed in and "1/35th Tiger I Early" that was on the bottom of the tank...don't think the germans put that on their tanks!!

I'm in road wheel hell!!!

Looks like you will be in for some fun as "white" is a bear to paint.

I read some where and did years ago is start with a light gray and add washes of off white color to bring in the white adds the shadows that way.
Use oil paint for the final blending and after dry a Dull coat.

MK sells a beautiful set of Tiger wheels just can't remember if Late or early I think they do both really a nice addition to any Tiger kit plus have the axles separate so can show a wheel off.

Well keep up the good work and enjoy the real Ramyon Noodles. with Kimchi of cause.

PS I bet getting cold now, that had to have been the coldest place I have ever been to in my life.
Minus 26 when I was there but felt like -40
Not to many days above 6 or 7 degrees.

Thanks jeff. I have been layering the white paint, I finally have the figures covered with a good base coat of white. Now i have to paint the remaining parts (hat, gloves, etc..) then i will move on to finishing them off. It certainly has driven me crazy tho! I will keep those road wheels in mind for my next model, Dragons Tiger I, im going to keep this one rather simple.

P.S...those Raymon noodles are amazing..especially with chicken and cheese. I am not a huge fan of Kimchi, it is much to spicy for my weak stomach. It is starting to get rather cold, PT in the morning is devilshly cold!!

Btw, meant to ask..where in Oklahoma are you located? My fiance's family is in Woodward.

Well Justin Tulsa County Woodward out west to me been there a great place.
Yes we did not have to run when 6 or below and most times as luck would have it was 7 to 8 ,but we did get out of a bunch of them as the snow was falling and the CO was afraid some Korean driver might slide out of control and plow into us ,as they do not slow down in the snow.made for some good long runs 10 miles or more as we had a real CO that was a stickler for running long runs to heat us up.

Enjoy the build.

Jeff,

There isn't much out there in Woodward, its very flat and boring! Hopefully, it doesn't get that cold here! I understand about the Korean drivers, they don't slow down for anything!

Tim,

Thanks for following, this is probably obvious but any information or hints/tips and especially constructive critiscm will be greatly appreciated. I am very excited about this build! I love Tigers and Pz. IVs.

To all, this will be as far as I get for a week or so, we are heading out for the field for a time, not sure when I will get back. Soon as I make some more progress, I will certainly post more pictures. Next up is the rear deck(?) with the exaust and rear fenders.

Hey Justin,
You've a good head start with your Tiger build.
I noticed that you've marked the instructions indicating damage to the side skirts/fenders.
Are you going with the kit parts or some PE ?
FYI - some German parkas were made reversible with a pale gray aka "mouse gray" colour.

http://www.atthefront.com/g_uni_parka.htm
http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Heer/04CamoClothing.html

I would suggest you vary the uniforms your figures are wearing, not to mention "dirtying up" the snowsuit pants a bit.
Looking forward to the finished product.
Cheers

I am going to try an attempt at using aluminum from a soda can to simulate the driver side fenders, and have them all banged up. The radio operator side (right) won't have but two small sections of fenders remaining, as proof by my reference photos as can be seen here:
http://tiif.de/thread.php?threadid=47&sid=0c9472f415b766113c36e18d35fab96d

The tank is S13.

The figures so far just have the all white as a base color, after I return from the field they will be given varying shades for each jacket and pants. atleast two of the crew members will have grey pants and white jackets. Already if you notice the loader took his gloves off and left them in the turret, on top of the breech. These guys will also be very dirty.

Thanks for that link, it was just want i needed to finish these guys up! Your a wonderful help jjumbo!

Hey Justin,
I thought those pictures of S13 looked familiar.
Osprey's New Vanguard #5 "Tiger I Heavy Tank 1942-1945" has some similar shots and a colour print of S13.
The pictures show S13 was painted panzer gray and has the 5 S-Minenwerfers mounted.
If you look carefully, there's a rectangular patch welded above the "Balkenkruez" on the right side of the hull above the 2nd and 3rd sections of the side fenders that are damaged but not missing.
And wonder of wonders, Academy actually got the hull glacis right and included the periscope ports in the driver's front plate.
Hope that's of some help.
Cheers and TTo man-nap-ssi-da !!

kan-sahm-ni-da jjumbo! hope i spelled that right! I just learned to count from 1-10 the other day....

anyway, thanks for the tips on the Tiger, I was lost on what to paint her. I wanted to give her a whitewash finish, or even a panzer grey/dark yellow camo scheme! Also, the right side fender that is attached to the glacis, its on a horizontal plane, i don't know how to describe it. That will be cut away as I noticed that S13 is missing that also. Looking at the pictures I think the driver liked to sideswipe trees!

Yo-bo-se-yo Justin !
Hey, I goofed on the date of those photos of S13.
According to Histoire & Collections "Tigers On The Eastern Front", they appear to be from December 1943 to January 1944 so a base coat of Panzer Gray is not correct.
And don't go by the S13 paint scheme in the Academy instructions, it's incorrect.
If you go with a whitewash, stick to a Panzer Yellow base coat with Red Brown stripes.
"TOTEF" mentions that the Tigers of the 2nd SS Das Reich had PY stripes painted over their PG in the Spring of 1943 and has a colour plate of S24 repainted in PY with RB stripes during Operation Zitadelle and the Battle of Kursk.
Yeah, it's her right front mudguard that's missing, it sure looks like she banged into something on that right hand side.
Hope that's of additional help !!

An-ni-yo jjumbo! ha that one rhymed. Thanks for the correction, always great to have accurate information. I'd love to be able to paint her PG/PY, i think that would look great. I am going to build her around Feb/Mar of '43 during the Manstein counter attack at Kharkov.
Back from the field early, here is the progress so far:

damage to the rear:

rear end:

some damage to the front and the missing fender:

side shot:

and what build would be complete without some injury?

ouch!!! need to be careful with new blades next time!

well guys, here is are updated pics of the completed build. The only deviation in plan was using the kits fenders. I found them easy enough to mold and damage so I didn't use aluminum like I had planned (I also was down to 9 fingers, wasn't trying to mess with sharp aluminum.) Stay tuned for painting pictures.

Hey Justin,
Yikes, that's a nasty flesh wound you've got there.
Try taping your fingertips with thin masking tape, it will save you a bit of grief.
The print of S13 in Osprey's New Vanguard #5 shows the Spring 1943 PG and PY paint scheme.
It's quite striking looking.

i was wondering if there was any sarcasm with the masking tape idea...

Great news about the paint scheme jjumbo, I was hoping I could paint her PG/PY. I was vainly trying to locate color pics of S13 online and to no avail. Thanks so much for your help with this and previous builds, your a great Canadian. (In the army we use "your a great american")

Hey Justin,
That's what we Canadians do, try and help everyone else but ourselves !!
No sarcasm meant, just some very bad and very bloody personal experiences with my Xacto knives has taught me to either tape or bandage my fingertips when carving or cutting plastic or resin.
I've dug out an Academy Tiger from my stash and have been following your build, it appears to be basically the same kit sans the MiniArt figures.
I like that you get a spare set side fenders, it gives you backup if you mess up while bending or twisting them.
Does your kit come with a set of Academy's indy Tiger tracks or are they stiff vinyl like the ones in my kit?
Their indy tracks aren't bad and you should be able to pick up a set somewhere in Korea.
Looking forward to the paint scheme !!
Cheers

Well, i will keep that in mind when I am cutting up any plastic. I am having a hell of a time trying to not open the wound back up. I just can't stop working on the Tiger!

The kit comes with Academy's indy links. They look really good, there are a few punch out marks on the inside of the track. Will be starting those today. Paint pictures will be up shortly, I finished her basecoat last night.

Hey Justin,
Not that I recommend it, since it is seriously toxic, but you could always super glue your gaping wound !!!
Believe it or not, CA glue is used as a alternate for surgical sutures.
Good to hear that they included the indy tracks, the vinyl ones are nice but really stiff and would require a great deal of persuasion to make them sag.
Looking forward to the completed build.
Cheers

The tracks are on! I used 96 links per side to achieve the proper sag. I honestly can say these were magnificent to put on, clean up was minimal and fit was excellent.

base coat of Flat Earth;

pieces of paper to hold the tracks to the proper sag:
