I'm a fairly new diaroma modeler and welcome any help on installing realistic rifle slings on my german and american wwII figures. I've tried
various thicknesses of painted string and rubber bands with no success.

you might want to try masking tape or lead foil.

You don't even need the expense of lead foil. The foil top from a yogurt pot works just as well.

I've always found masking tape to be quite good. Or just recently, a piece of printer paper soaked in super glue, works great.

I've used strips of paper and masking tape too but my preference is stips of foil. Best source for that is the heavy foil around the top of wine bottles. It forms very nicely and keeps its shape.

A nice Merlot, Shiraz or Cab Sauv is always good for the hobby....

cheers

Brown paper lunch bag. Wash with Tamiya red-brown and mondo amounts of iso -alcohol.
While wet,wad it up into a ball and then carefully unwad it to flat again. Let dry and then cut to suit.
cheers!

Electrical tape. It's great for slings as it's streachable and durable. Only thing you got to do is to remove the glue on the sticky side. This can be done easily with with a cotton bud soaked in meneral or lacquer thinner (it won't damage the tape at all). After this, simply paint and you're done! Here's a pic of the tape I'm referring to:

I have used lead foil for quite some time, but it is becoming harder to find. I am currently using metal foil from food containers, it is a bit heavier than the cooking foil. I think the metal just holds up better than some of the other alternatives.

Hi BABCAT,
there is a good, and pleasant too!!!! source of lead foil..... look on a wine shop, many wine brands, specially champagne, have the cork and neck of bottle wrapped up with thin lead foil.
Personally, I arranged a kind of "contract" with a wine bar so when they finish a bottle, they put away the metal wrapping so, at the moment, I have about 6 square feet of metal foils on various thickness.
bye

p.s. apologies for my english!!!

Roberto,
I think that is where most of my current stash of lead came from, unfortunately lead foil on wine bottles is pretty much non-existant around here. Now it is mostly plastic, with some lead free metal foil (which I save too!). So I have been experimenting with the available replacements for the lead, and they seem to work pretty good in most applications.

Thanks

I have found a good multipurpose product that can simulate belts in planes, slings for weapons, tow slings for vehicles or anything that requires a flat/uniform width and length.
SolderWick comes in multiple widths and is available in electronics shops like RadioShack

Hi,

I use lead wire from Plus Models, costs about 0.99p a packet and you get a lot. Comes in various sizes 02.mm, 0.3mm, 0.4mm (good for slings), 0.5mm, 0.6mm, 0.7mm, 0.8mm, 0.9mm and 1mm thicknesses.

Just roll it flat with a wall paper roller and you will have consistent strap widths without any hassel. It's flexible and fairly easy to work with. For thicker straps just use 0.6mm or 0.8mm depending on what you want.

I tried a lot of other methods but this works for me.

Al
