One method I've read of is to ask your wife or girlfriend for an old pair of pantyhose. You can cut little squares out of it, and white glue to the helmet.
Sounds good, but I have to admit I haven't tried it yet myself.

i have used that but they material tends to frey quite alot

It shouldn't really fray if it's been sealed with white glue - in fact the white glue would make it quite hard.
You might also try some gauze bandages...
