I just happened upon this photos of a Land Rover in Afghanistan in 2002. Does anyone know if it is the same type as the one in the old Tamiya "Pink Panther" kit. The Royal Marines nicknamed these "Mad Max" apparently, which I thought was extremely cool.
Thanks in advance for the input...

Keenan, I can't say that they are the same, but i doubt it. The old land rovers where like 70's vintage rovers. Accurate Armour has a kit of that rover. Look for it under the modern wheeled vehicle kits on AA's web site, and I believe that is nicknamed "tugs", but i could be wrong. stug

Looks like a decendant of the Pink Panther. Looks like a very 'doable' conversion project.

You're right Stug. Found the new one on the AA site. $85.00 without shipping. So much for that diorama idea... Thanks for the prompt reply...

The wife told me this week if I buy one more model that she was going to tape them all together and make a shed out of them and I would have to live in it...

sorry lads but the land rover in the picture is different to the tamiya kit, the one in the picture like the aa kit is one of the latest models of landy to enter service called wmix ( dont know what it stands for ) theyve not been around long, but they are a modernised 110 land rover
the tamiya kit depicts one of the original 110's in use since the 70s by most infantry and armoured regiments as well as special forces for recce tasks ahead of a main force.
the other vehicle looks like a 1 tonne land rover conversion, they were designed for towing artilery and load carrying

The Pink Panther and the Italeri SAS Combat Car are the Land Rover IIA 109 series the picture of the Royal Marines vehicle is based on the Land Rover Defender 110 series. This same vehicle is used by the US Army Rangers. The Rangers refer to this vehicle as the RSOV (Ranger Special Operations Vehicle). Here is a link to the Ranger version. I do not know of any other land rover kits besides the AA kit. You might want to find out how different the IIA 109s and the Defender 110s are? It may not be to difficult to do an upgrade. It would deffinatly be a cool project.

hey guys, jimbrae's right,AA and their range of landrovers are expensive, but boy,is it worth it!everything you need is in the box, castings are near perfect and the only item that broke when my XD came in the post was the spade!WMIK stands for Weapon Mounted Installation Kit,i think they were first used in Kosovo, then Sierra Leone,Macedonia,Afghanistan and most recently Iraq. Its definitely a kit that screams "BUILD ME!"

Hi guys
Sorry to disappoint you but the Land Rover 110 as in the AA kit and the earlier Series II 109 as depicted in the Tamiya/Italeri/Revell kits are completely different animals.
The 109 has leaf spring suspension whereas the 110 has coil springs. The 110 is generally slightly bigger all around i.e. 110" wheelbase instead of 109" and also wider track too.
The AA kit is a fantastic piece of work, masses of resin mouldings, white metal chassis and rollover bars and photoetch details, it is expensive but I took the plunge and got one recently (the WMIK version).
IMHO this vehicle was one of the stars of the recent conflict providing our British troops at least with a highly potent, high mobility strike force. We had a discussion on this forum a couple of weeks ago under 'Combat Land Rovers' in the Softskins group.
At a risk of repeating myself come on ItalTamiCademy et all give us a Modern LandRover series, please, please, please.
Happy modelling
