I just picked up my first set of Tamiya 1/35 figures. I'm trying to figure out the color coding for the figures. Looking on the back of the box how do I figure out what part gets what Tamiya color?

Here's a list of the colour codes.

Also, look at some references for the colours, as Tamiya may have it wrong.
Tamiya paints aren't the best for figure painting, so you'd do best to use something else. I use Games Workshop acrylics, some use enamels or oils. It doesn't matter if the colour is exactly on, as wear and fading will change it somewhat.

Hi
I think tamiya paint is good to paint with.
but I mix the colour until a nuance that I want to have.
For example field grey is to green I think so I mix in little black and white to make the colour a little grayer.
good luck

Since you're just starting out with wfigures, go with the best to begin with...Vallejo acrylics. There are several sets available with a number of specific colors. The eye dropper bottle keeps the paint fresh literally for years.
Tamiya paints are not brush friendly. Their color matching is sketchy to non existant and the choice of colors is extremely limited compared to just about any other company's range.
You can get the full range of Vallejo at Colorado Miniatures. It's worth the investment.
