Hi there
I rarely stray from WWII subjects so most things here are a mystery to me! Regardless, I found this photo in my local paper and thought it interesting enough to post here. OK, so maybe it is a common vehicle to some, but could someone at least humour me as to the vehicle type and why the wheels are as they are?
Cheers
Brad

The vehicle I believe is a South African made Caspir mine protected vehicle, why those wheels I dont know? I can only assume they are intended to drive over mines or something?

It's a Casspir. A South African APC.
Check the vehicle name. Nice play on words.
EDIT: Not quick enough. Tks Rob.
With wheels like that it must feel like you've hit a mine everytime you "find" a pot hole.

Here is a link to a Company that makes the Caspir in 1/35th scale.

Frenchy is the man that really has a soft spot for these vehicles.

Looks like I'm a bit too late on this one Bill
The Casspir can be fitted with steel wheels for the execution of Mechanical Assisted Mine Clearance (MAMC).
From http://www.mechemdemining.com :
"Steel wheels are manufactured with the explicit aim of detonating anti-personnel mines by driving over them. The detonating power of anti-personnel landmines are insufficient to cause any significant damage to the wheels or the vehicle and these mines can, in this process, be neutralized quickly, safely and cost effectively. The system is not suitable for use with anti-tank mines because such mines cause too much damage to the wheels and the vehicle. If however an anti-tank mine is detonated the personnel would still be protected from such blast. Steel wheels have the added ability of crushing and destroying the vegetation in the area in preparation of the terrain for the use of other methods of de-mining. Although steel wheels are very robust and not easily broken, normal field repairs can be carried out to repair the minimal damage that could occur."

Good stuff fellas! Thanks for the info. My interest is getting piqued by what I define as weird things lately...

What an unusual vehicle. The link says they have some 1/35 scale South African vehicles, but it doesn't say how much they are. I guess the old saying really is true, if you have to ask how much something costs, you can't afford it!
