Can anyone suggest which DML M1A1 kit would be best for building a USMC M1A1 OIF? I need the kit number, if you know it. I prefer the DML kits, and I want to build one for my son, a Marine Gunny who served with 1st Tank Bn. Thanks.

Dragon M1A1 AIM Abrams #3535 by far the best kit you could want. And i believe it's perfect for what you are looking to do. For some extra details Real Model M1A1 M1A2 Abrams Stowage #A35111

Well I wouldn't say perfect. Although that is the best Abrams kit, it's intended to be an Army vehicle. It does not have the Marine Corps smoke grenades. Also I believe the Marines had their own kind of bustle rack extension not found in that kit. The only other detail I can think of to round out a Marine Abrams (aside from markings) would be a tank infantry phone. I think these items can be found in Tamiya's M1A2 kit which also builds into a Marine Corps M1A1. Not as nice a kit though. Why DML doesn't come out with a Marine version of the new M1 kit, I have no idea.

I guess (like anything) it depends how much money you want to spend. Of course if you can, scratch build the Marine parts then simply add them to the AIM kit #3535. Or you can build Tamiya's M1A2 kit as a Marine tank. Like I already mentioned it's not as good a kit, but it's still nice. Another option is to combine the Tamiya Marine parts with the Dragon kit. Any one else with ideas?

My question to help out is, did the Marines upgrade to the AIMS? if not then you might have to remove alot of the AIMS itmes. So it might be best to go with the Tamiya or the older DML kit, not sure of the number.

Yes, the USMC uses AIM and older HC tanks still. All their HCs will eventually be replaced by AIMs as they cycle through the rebuild/reset process.
The folding BRE initially used by the USMC in OIF is now a part of the AIM upgrades and an Army-wide piece of kit. It is in both the Dragon M1A2 SEP kit and the Academy M1A1 USMC 2003 kit. The Academy kit includes all the parts to make a USMC tank ( folding BRE, smoke launchers, T/I phone, and MDC- Missile Countermeaure Device), but the rest of the kit besides the new J sprue sucks. The turret is too short, the tracks are the incorrect old T-156 chevron blocks, the hull and running gear are weak copies of the older Tamiya kit, the decals are fictional, etc., etc.

Thanks guys, I think I may pick up the Academy kit for the Marine-specific details and do the DML M1A1, #3535. Appreciate the help.

the tracks are the incorrect old T-156 chevron blocks,
From a model making stand point, yes, but since there was such a high demand for the T-158 track, older T-156 was sent over so that vehicles could still run. As of 2007 when our Tank PLT had to change out track there was some T-156 there that could be used. But the screwed up part was that we saw brand new T-158 track being used as road bumps on the FOBs.

There were a few pics of T156 track still being used as a necessity when T158 track was in high demand. They were't used long though since they wore out more quickly due to the weight of the heavier tanks now. Further though, the T156 tracks in Academy's kit is molded incorrectly, since they are a copy of Tamiya's old tracks, with the center guides molded in the middle of each track block, as opposed to connecting them together.
