Do I have to use Tamiya Thinner or can I use Iso Alcohol to thin this paint?

Yep, this is true for acrylics
I bought a small bottle of Tamiya thinner for acrylics and when I opened it smelled a lot like the isopropyl alcohol I use to sanitize my hands. Wasted money, somewhat

Isopropynol alcohol or rubbing alcohol can be bought in pharmacys for much less than tamiya thinner and is just as effective!

I am told that , but have never tried, automobile windshield (windscreen..) washer fluid works as well and does not impart the blue color to even white paint.
At US$ 0.97/gal it's cheaper than even the US$0.99/quart rubbing alc from Wal-Mart.
Anyone actually tried it?
Mike

I use rubbing alchool (the one you can buy ata any dept. store) sometimes with the addition of a drop of dish soap to help it flowing better. If white is not involved I use windshield liquid always bought at a dept store. In Italy we have a few types af the later so I have to check that is the alchool based one. With what I spend for 300cc of Tamiya I buy 10 liters of the others...

Well, I agree with these guys, at least for the most part. A couple of small points, though...
Make sure that you use the 91% grade of Isopropyl Alchohol, as the generic grade is only 70% and does not work as well.
And Tamiya thinner is not just wasted money, it actually has a wetting agent (retarder) and a flow enhancer added, although it is still primarily alchohol. It works a little better than straight alchohol, especially for fine work and work with matte colors...The Alchohol accelerates the drying of the paint, and the retarder helps offset this a little.
You can just about replicate it by getting the 91% Isopropyl Alchohol and adding an acrylic retarder to it. The formula that works best for me is about 15% retarder to Alchohol.
Hope this helps,
Scott

Hi,
finally I can contribute , the thing that I use to dillute my tamiya is destiled (cooled down boiled water if you will), with a little bit of spiritus (well yes in the netherlands we call it spiritus ,it consists of ethylalcohol and I reckon it is the same thing that you people call windowcleaner, is it?...). It dilutes great (the small drop of spiritus breaks the tension of the paint and creates a great flow so to speak). you'd be surprised by how easy the paint handles when you use the above to dilute with.
take care,
Alco

Does anyone using rubbing alcohol as thinner ever have it remove the paint on the model?
I have had this problem using the paint thinnner.

Yep,
i use it and find no problems with it. Be sure to ask that it is based on Isopropyl Alchohol.
