USMC 4th tank battalion on Iwo Jima used rear deck water tanks extensively. The book to get is Tank Warfare on Iwo Jima by David Harper. I just flipped through the book and counted 11 pictures showing M4A3s with a rear deck water tank, some close up.

More pics on the internet:

Good luck with your project.

Here are some more:

Nice model of M4A2 King Kong on Saipan:

Really cool model of Crispy, 4th tanks Iwo Jima:

The water tank itself was a spare fuel tank from an M3A1. The Academy M3A1 kit includes a pair, though they would need some modification. The straps are molded on and there is no indentation and cap on the side. I read somewhere these tanks are slightly too small, but I cannot find the source of that comment.

Lee,

find yourself a copy of "Iwo Jima tank battles" put out by squadron signal, with Dave Harper is the author. IT is worth every dime! Loads of pics, awesome color profiles, after action reports, just awesome book for any USMC sherman fan.

Osprey's "Modelling the Sherman Tank" has a section on Iwo Shermans including scratch building the water tank.
