This maybe a sin, but there was a 1/72 scale model complete with aircraft of a US Navy aircraft carrier in the Washington, DC, Air and Space museum, a few years ago on the second floor. I have never seen anything that detailed on that size before. Maybe, some one can do a 1/144 Tiger or Sherman with a full interior and engine compartment. OH! And working independant track.

I think it's impossible to choose just one.....there are so many different subjects , scales etc. All have their own appealing qualities. The Clervaux dio for sheer scope of the undertaking alone was masterful.
A lot of dios coming out of the Netherlands/Belgium in the last few years are jaw dropping.
No one has yet to mention (it's still early in the thread) the unbelievable dioramas being created by Jean-Bernard Andre. Sokol, Galilee, Archangel....all works of art all done with little or no "store bought kits"
Then there's the late Roy Hunt with the simple yet poignant "Storm Child" vignette/dio
There's no way I could pick one favorite diorama.
I would have to say that my favorite diorama builder has to be JBA just because of the uniqueness and originality of his work.
Cheers,
Charles

There are so many great ones out there it is tough to say, if I had to pick one though, it would probably be "Beached Whale" by Per Olav Lund. Link. The subject is unique, the story is compelling and the workmanship is stunning.

Okay Ollie,
Although each time I peruse the diorama section of this and other sites something 'jumps' out at me always, here is the diorama I was impressed with enough to continue going back and looking.
Not only is it the unique subject, the vibrant colors used (which is difficult to pull off) but the fact that everything is scratch built. This has been by current favorite for some time.

That diorama was called "The Bridge Pvt Ryan" by Steve Martin (Mark IV) great Dio. One of my faves is "The Korson Pocket 1944" by Vladimir Ulyanov (Ulyanov) a great winter dio. Another awsome dio I think is called "We're tired of fighting" by David capriano, I think thats his name. The Dio is about a large group of German's surrendering, including officers to an American Sherman. It includes a group of Germans in an old railway box car. I wish I could see it again, never marked it in my Faves. Awsome! So many great Dio's but this one really did something to me, very moving. i hope someone knows the one I mean, would love to see it again. Cheers Geraint Somebody on this site had made the final scene of Saving Pvt Ryan with the Tiger going over the bridge,I really enjoyed that one.

I've been at this for a while, so I don't know that I could pick one dio, but I have a laundry list of artists that I admire.

No problem Geraint, my pleasure. Korsun Pocket is very nice, but I have to say my favorite diorama builder named Vladimir is Vladimir Demchenko. My favorite of his: Here
