Hello everyone,
First off I would like to thank everyone that has commented and emailed me reference my M2A2 OIF dio. It means a lot to me to have so many words of encouragement!
But, of course as I keep working on my stuff I run into more questions!
1) Are current US ammo boxes (25mm/7.62/50cal) lettered in Yellow or Black? Are they pretty much painted the same as the vehicles they are on, or might there be a few OD on desert vehicles?
2) Are Alice Packs OD green or are the Woodland Camo?
also,
3) I am loading up my Bradley's cargo racks with:
a) Ammo boxes: 25mm, 7.62, 50 cal, and a couple of 120mm's thrown in for good measure (I kinda figure that crew members would grab anything that they can to store stuff in)
b) Jerry Can's: Tan Plastic H2O cans, would they have gas cans too, or something else like diesel fuel for generators, etc?
c) Different sizes of Alice Packs, some with Isomats, some without.
d) Random packs and duffle bags, does the army still use the "old" style canteens and plastic folding shovel covers?
e) MRE boxes
f) Gulfa water boxes
g) Some random tarps
h) Concertina wire spool
Is there anything else that I am missing, I have looked through hundreds of my pictures to try and make as much a variety of items as possible, but I would love to add more! I am going to try and build a nice red plastic Coleman cooler, I think that a spot of color would add a lot to the overall sandy effect.
So many questions...
Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me,
Take care and stay safe,
Chris

They are semi gloss OD green with yellow markings and normally not repainted. Ammo cans are recycled so sometimes the crew will paint them a more appropriate color, but by then they hold something other than ammo, like weapon cleaning kits and the like. Just like you figured in question 3.1) Are current US ammo boxes (25mm/7.62/50cal) lettered in Yellow or Black? Are they pretty much painted the same as the vehicles they are on, or might there be a few OD on desert vehicles?

Current MOLLE packs are woodland camouflaged. Older ALICE packs were OD.2) Are Alice Packs OD green or are the Woodland Camo?

A Brad crew definitely wouldn't have a 120mm round in the bustle rack.3) I am loading up my Bradley's cargo racks with:

They would have a gas can with some type of oil in it. Not normally any fuel like diesel (vehicels run on JP8), and the crew would not have a generator available to them.b) Jerry Can's: Tan Plastic H2O cans, would they have gas cans too, or something else like diesel fuel for generators, etc?

All of this is stuff you'd find. Toss in a couple of "Number 10" cans. These are plain metal cans like large coffee cans that soldiers scrounge from the cooks. Sometimes they are used shiny metal (rip the label off a can from your pantry), other times they are painted black or OD. They are used as wash basins, drip cans, pot to boil water (different can for different uses).c) Different sizes of Alice Packs, some with Isomats, some without.

Sometimes the BLAHA (basic load ammo holding area ) , ASP (ammo storage point), or
AHA (ammo holding area ) will paint the boxes as well!
say for example you need to draw 2100 cal .50 rounds well that's an odd number for a draw so at least one box will be less the alloted ammount. so if there is 15 boxes of ammo on a pallet being picked up they might mark it somehow to designate that it is the low box compared to the other boxes you strap to the ones on the pallet.
I have an ammo draw pretty soon so I can snap off a few pics while we work and post them sometime if it helps?

Thanks for the info, interesting stuff. And yes, if you get a chance to take some pictures that would be great (I don't think that you can ever have enough references!).
Thanks again,
Chris

I think he's talking about just for stowage, like Abrams guys do with the 155mm ammo cans which have been shown on some OIF stuff. I think a 155mm ammo can might be more appropriate than a 120mm ammo can.

Rob,
Actually yes, I am talking about the the long wooden (I think) boxes with the twisted cable ends. They look like heavy shell boxes to me but I might be wrong. If I can get the picture to work, they are the two sitting on top of the blow-off panels right in front of the APU.
Thanks,
Chris

Rob, I tanked on M1A1's for four years, and cannot for the life of me recall wooden crates for 120mm ammo storage. All of our ammo was stored in honeycombed pallets with covers on the opening end, and usually on a HEMMT or in ammo bunkers at the ASP. I do however have a crate very similar to the one in your pic, It was for mortar rounds though. I was also on M-109's for a bit in the Guard, and the 155mm rounds were stored in tubes, I can't recall if they were in crates beforehand though. I can email you a digital pic of the mortar box I have if you like.

Ahh, those are 105mm ammo boxes. Even though the 105mm main gun has bee out of frontline service for a while, there are plenty of those wooden ammo boxes still kicking around, and many have found additional uses for them. 120mm ammo comes in metal tubes that are palletized and usually referred to as honey combs. I don't recall how many are on a pallet.

That would explain why I never saw any of those boxes, we were on A1's so never had any 105mm ammo bouncing around.Ahh, those are 105mm ammo boxes.
Was it common for M1's to carry spare round like that, in boxes on top of the turret?

No, it wasn't. The ammo was delivered in the ammo boxes and the boxes were turned back over to the support platoon just like any other ammo residue. Sometimes, not all of the boxes made it back to the support platoon for turn in to the ASP. Very much like many 7.62mm or .50 cal ammo cans. Once the 105mm was going out of use, accounting of the ammo crates was a little more lax.Was it common for M1's to carry spare round like that, in boxes on top of the turret?

Thanks to everyone for their help so far, but...it brings me to more questions.
This set by "Plus Models" is called "US common equipment (Vietnam)", and it seems to have a great variety of items. Are most (or all) of them still in use today?

Awsome!
Thanks everyone for your replies and insights, I am trying to put as much different stowage into the bustle racks as I can and you all have been most helpful!
