I have the Italeri Dukw in 1/35 and I am wondering what the easiest way to replicate the tarp over the rear is. I also have the Tamiya Red bull express deuce and a half and am wondering if the tarp frames in that kit could be used/modified for the Dukw any help would be greatly appreciated.

Peter.

Hi Peter,

If you are going to cover the whole tilt then I would suggest you use 1mm copper wire for the frame. Copper wire bends much easier, just strip some from an old electrical cable. If you're going to expose part of the frame then 0.5m might be better.

You can use tissue paper for the tarp, (Klennex is good) just cut it to shape, a little bigger then you will need and soak it in PVA (white) glue. Then squeeze of the excess and lay it over the frame. When it starts top set paint it before it goes hard, that way you can life it off, paint underneath and then relay it and paint the top. When you are happy trim off and excess and add some rope (thread) as necessary.

It's not as hard as it sounds and with very low cost you can afford to experiment.

I made the tarp for my Bedford using the same process.

I did ther tarp for my DUKW load the same way

The bows from the Red Ball Express truck should be fine. After all, a DUKW is just a CCKW with pontoons.

That tissue technique is the way to go. If you can dye the white glue green, that helps to hide the true color of the tissue. If you can find it, use green or brown tissue paper from a craft supply or gift card store.

Good Luck and post your results.

I find the tissue from the packaging in dress shirts when you bring them home from the store is worth keeping. It's a bit heavier and won't disintigrate when soaked in the diluted white glue mixture.

cheers
