I am looking for period photo reference on the inside of an M8 Greyhound. I have seen restorations with the turret walls painted green and with them painted white. I would like to know which is correct or if maybe both are.

Thanks,
Mark Lopiccola

Mark,

See my M8 Greyhound WIP post under the Feedback section. There's some photo's there that may help along with feedback.

See ya.

I don't have an uploadable version of a photo, but....
Squadron Armor Number 37 US Armored Cars in Action pages 7 and 9 have overhead photos of an M8 and the sides (inside and out) of the turret are clearly OD. The base turret ring with the targeting 'degree markers' on it (the outter lip) is white with black lettering for the degree markers. Traverse motor is white. The floor is OD, the hull sides are white, ammo racks are white. Gun breach is dark in color.

I started at Toadman's and that is when I started doubting myself. Of the two vehicles shown, which is the correct scheme?

I think I am going to leave it just the way it is.

Thanks to all for the help

Mark,

Put yourself into the crews POV, in a frontline unit. You've got an open top turrent. What color stands out from an aircrafts POV?

You could throw a tarp over the top and call it good too, which was common in the field.

Just a thought.
See ya in the funnies...

It's hard to put myself in the tanks crews position, but I able to look down on the model from above. I have to say, with the walls painted white and weathered, you can't see a whole lot.

However, I DID re-shoot the hull floor and turret walls OD. I think I am going to go all out on the turret ring markings and use Testor's decal paper and my printer. I have been using it for registration numbers for a while now, I think I have the hang of it.

I will post finished pictures.

Well, after a lot of "hemming and hawing" this is what I ended up with:

Hi Mark,
Spot on!! Question however, Are the numbers around the ring decals and if so who has them, or were they hand painted? Excellent job.

Brian,

I created the turret ring vernier using a desktop publishing program and printing it on Testor's clear decal film. The publisher program is part of the Open Office Suite and is free. (http://www.openoffice.org/) The program allows you to take a line of text and shape it to a curved line. For this model, I it's about a 1-3/10 inch diameter circle - found by trial and error method
