Thought I'd start the year with a very small and quick build (i.e. one I'd actually get finished) so I did this yesterday. I've had the figure (already painted) for some time and have been meaning to do something with him for some time. Snow is bicarbonate of soda mixed with pva glue.
And a couple more against a natural background:

Cool! I think your figure is beautifully painted! Two things though...#1 I think if you add something to your roadsign/ directional marker, it will help to tie into the "A long way from home" title of your vignette. #2... this is probably just me but the overall scene is a little plain... something missing. I am not sure exactly and feel bad for not having a reccomendation.

Thanks for the comments. The plan is to add the name of a town/city to the sign - given the snow, I have thought about Stalingrad with the inference that the soldier is on the long trek back to Germany.
As for it being plain, I do know what you mean albeit this was quite deliberate as I wanted something quick and simple - I could say that there is loads of detail but it's hidden by the snow The fence and the sign have been kept a little lower in height that they should be to try and give the impression that the snow is quite deep.
I do have another, similar figure but on skis so I'm going to do something a little more complex with him.

Nice work, what kind of paint did you use on the figure? As for it being "plain" I think it looks good. Simple and good. Due to the snow not much could be added that would be above the snow level.
Overall very nice job, I love the fig....keep it up!

I really like your snow look. Can you explain what type of soda you used, and was it just Elmer's white glue or something stronger?

Thanks for the comments guys.
California Greg - I used normal bicarbonate of soda with standard PVA glue (I'm in the UK but, as far as I know, Elmers is identical to the glue I used)

Bicarbonate of soda is known as baking soda here in the US.

i think it looks great! Living in Canada, i get the "Snow Depth"trick. Very Cool. If you did want to alleviate the plain-ness, though it is very accurate, maybe the tops of a few leafless shrubs...?

I mentioned earlier in the thread that I had another figure on skis that I was going to put into a vignette. Well, here he is with a little touch-up still to do:

i think they are great, the first one coudl do with a bird on the pole or something tho,
but otherwise, brilliant, its the simplicity that does it:D
i dotn like workign with bicarb soda, it gets everywhere, and tastes awful
