Hi kjeld

I'm really curious to see how you put this together. Please show us some pictures and let us know the results.

This is a bit late, but if you buy an inexpensive ($10 - $20) hand-held, battery operated fly zapper (uses a neg-ion generator), keep the handle part which contains the generator and battery compartment, buy a cheap plastic container, some screen mesh... and voila! A grassblaster for a fraction of the cost of the big name, big price one. And works just as well.

Late or not, maybe someone else can use the idea. It's in Dutch but pictures say sometimes more than words.

Yeah. That's basically how I built mine, but with a plastic container instead of the strainer. BTW; if you use a metal mesh on the cup part be careful not to let it touch your grounding pin as you shake on your static grass. A nasty surprise (and a reminder) will result!!

On the subject of static grass applicators, has anyone used longer material for 'grass'? Commercial static grass was meant for use on HO and O scale model railroads, and are therefore scaled accordingly. The longest available static grass which I've found is 6.5 mm which is really long for model railroading, but is only a modest height in 1/35. Has anyone tried a longer length material through a static grass applicator?

I thank you for the post, I eventually decided to buy the racket flyswatter and manufacturing.
I found the racquet is not battery powered flashlight, powered by a rechargeable battery with power outlet, just like a phone charger.

.... the result satisfactory but not spectacular, perhaps because the static grass HO diorama is small for the brick tank 1 / 35
anyway, this herb is just the base for shrubs, bushes and other vegetation

when can I show photos

Hi all,
This may interest a few people.
http://csxdixieline.blogspot.com.au/2010/06/howto-static-grass-applicator.html

Mike: I purchased my negative ion generator from Oatly electronics, here's the link.
http://secure.oatleyelectronics.com//product_info.php?products_id=915&osCsid=3594ca9237f58562f2fda672a689eb8c

They also had a few for sale on ebay, but I don't think they do at the moment.

I tried the fly swat version and the negative ion version and would have to say the negative ion version works better, but it may have just been that the fly swat I used may have been not that good. It worked but not as good.

Cheers.

are these used to make the static grass stand erect? if yes, then does rubbing a plastic ruler on ur head for sometime and hover it on the grass helps?

No problem I'm very happy with the way mine is working, here's a few pics of my first test using the negative ion version. This is a test base that I have tried to flatten down the grass to see how well it will holds up to being painted etc. so it was straighter when I first applied it.

I'd probably check out the expo if it wasn't for that little bit of water between us and the mainland.

cheers.

Yes they are.
I have also heard of using a rubbed balloon and a straw to blow it upright, but I've never tried either of these methods even though they apparently do work... Not sure they would work as good as a negative ion generator.

cheers.

Yeah, if I lived closer I'd be there.

Also for anyone that may be interested I think when Oatley had the negative ion generators on ebay they may have posted worldwide, so if it seems cost effective it may be worth emailing them to find out.

cheers.

Hi Max,

Just another quick question, negative on generator has turned up but it is a module only?? Do you run yours of a 9 volt battery & then just attach it to a screw or helping hands clip??

Cheers Mike

Hi Mike,
I made something similar to this...
http://csxdixieline.blogspot.com.au/2010/06/howto-static-grass-applicator.html

but made a few modifications because I wanted to make one out of stuff I had laying around the house, it turned out to be a bit small but I bought Two negative ion's so my MK.II applicator will be a bit bigger. I run mine from a 9v power supply and like the link above I use an alligator clip to ground it to a pin or nail that is inserted into my dio base.
The Oatly web site has a wiring diagram for the negative ion generator,
http://secure.oatleyelectronics.com//product_info.php?products_id=915&osCsid=3594ca9237f58562f2fda672a689eb8c

just click on "click for PDF notes"

Cheers
