Hi all,

I bought a diorama from verlinden (2323,
in this diorama one figure is armed with a M16A2 with M203 grenade
launcher.
All searches I made in books (Special Operations Forces in
Afghanistan, Osprey) and internet, I saw the American special forces
with M4 carbine! The M16A2 was used in the first years of the
conflict? If anyone have any sources, I would like to see some photos
or books references.

Cheers

Its not common but I've head of some teams being able to choose from a vast variety of weapons. Its very possible a SEAL team member would choose that particular weapon depending on the resistance they would likely come in contact with. I doubt you'll find any pictures on the internet of SEALs on a real combat mission, especially covert missions, as it appears your dio is set to.

SEAL members (and other SF troops) do pretty much choose their weapons of choice, within the limits of weapons used by the military. An M16/203 is a good combo, depending on the enemy you may be facing. The M16 gives a longer range than the M4 or other short-barreled weapons, adn teh M203 gives some area supression capability.

It's also possible that verlinden have done what they are fairly renowned for these days and simply use a weapon they already had molds for.

It's unfortunate that they do this, but take a look at any number of figures from the last couple of years, or equipment sets for that matter. They are known as being good at recycling.

Their 120mm SF on Horse is let down by the Vietnam era colt commando and PASGT body armour that smacks of zero research and 'get a figure out quick to cash in on the war'.

But...you are probably better off with the M16/203 than you are with the alternative - the XM177 that they would otherwise have tried to pass off as an M4!

Actually, we have the option of purchasing gas piston uppers such as the HK 416, which is outside the purview of regular military stocks.
That said, I spent a few weeks out at Coronado Island in November, so take this for what it's worth:
Those members of the Spec Op community you refer to no longer use the A2. They, as we, have the Mk12 SPR for longer ranges. In fact, last month we received our .300 Win. Mags (Mk13) which they use as well, hence the "Mk" designation.
There does seem to be a misconception about shorter range on the M4. The shorter barrel results in lowered muzzle velocity, but effectively the range is the same. The biggest difference between performance of the M16 and M4 is the sight radius, which is obviously shorter in the m4. The correct utilization of available optics minimizes those differences.
