I would rather use acrylics as my only type of paint for airbrushing.
I want to avoid enamels for its noxious fumes and the mess for cleaning, but also heard that there is no better base coat for anchoring acrylics than enamels.
I would welcome suggestions on this matter.
Cheers,
Flowers

Hi flowers, I follow what I picked up from the guys here on Armourama when I base coat. I use acrylic motorcar primer in an aerosol. It is relatively cheap and gives a good smooth base, I have never had any problems using either acrylics or enamels over it and never had any problems with it lifting when using masking tape. If you do try it make sure it is ACRYLIC as there are other types of car paint that can react with the plastic. Hope this helps.

I use almost exclusively Model Master Acryl Paint, Gray Primer - TES 4680.
Thinned to about 30/70 and sprayed thru the AB. Never had a problem.

Hi, Here in my area I use a general auto primer I pick up and the local car parts store called Varsity fast drying primer. What I like about it is that it's cheap and the pigments in it seem to be very finely ground, so it doesn't give that 'out of scale' appearance you can sometimes get out of the various primers on the market that aren't specifically made for models. It's very fast drying (although I let it set for at least a day before putting any other paint on top of it), and comes in a red oxide and light gray as well.
Take care, sgirty.

I use Krylon laquer primer myself I've never had any problems with it I usually let it set for 3 days or so after I primed the model before painting it

I use a multi-purpose acrylic I buy at local art crafts stores. It's cheap, fills small holes/scratches, I thin it with water and can be airbrushed. I use the Tamiya gray primer only on vinyl tracks...

I only stick to the rule of Acrylics over Enamels and vice versa... and the colour...hmmm that depends... Faces mostly desert yellow, vehicles, planes etc. mostly a dark grey colour....
