Hey Dan, I don't think any of the M60A1-M60A3 kits have differnt drivers hatches, do they? I never noticed it, but I was never a "angry turtle" crewman!
Yes, I know about the SGL's...too tired to remember to list that. Same with the TC's side RF. But thanks for the notes on what I missed.
Basically, I have the M60A1 and I have to make it a M60A3. I only have the Italeri or Academy M60A1 to work with, I have not seen the reissued RoG M60A3 (which I would prefer). I bought a trumpeter M60A3 (I KNOW, I know...) but it was a desperation move so I could POSSIBLY get the correct pieces to make a -A3 and maybe cast them in reswin so I have them on hand when the RoG kit is OOP.
You guys think this will work? The as yet unseen Trumpy kit has me nervous.
I think that they should have differant hatches as the 'A3 went to the AN/VV2 night viewer that I know the 'A1 didn't have. Still have to lokk at the Hunnicutt book! Dan

The Italeri kit includes the older style air cleaner boxes (the taller box behind the sponson box with US ARMY on it). By the 80s, these had been replaced by the top loading style only found in the M60A3 kit. If you have a reference photo and some sheet styrene, you should be able to make the old style look like the late style without much work.
Sabot,
Can you give me a photo of what you are talking about? I have been trying to get some pictures off the internet of the M60A1, but I didnt get any good sites. Know of any? Anybody know of any?
Everybody else,
Thank for your replys, I am gald my build got a good discussion going about the M60's. It helps everyone out.
Tankrider,
I did find it, and was able to fix it, but it was a pain! But it is good to know that for the future. Thank you for the information.
Later,
John
Here is a shot of the later style air cleaner, the black & green box above the right most support roller, directly below the main gun. Now compare it to the original style air cleaner depicted on the Italeri box art above.
Note that the tank above is not a vehicle in US service, so I would not use it as reference for all details, but you should be able to scratchbuild the late style air cleaners from the shots and using the kit piece as a size/base to add styrene to.

Sabot, thanks for the photos. Shows the tanks are not equipped with TTS as the tanks still have a searchlight on them. I wonder what country of service? Guess - Greece?
I have uploaded some photos of some M60A1's on my photo gallery. Go to Treadhead12 to veiw them. The one shot of H Co has a M60A1 in, IIRC, dultex camo pattern.

Surprised to hear that the Italeri kit is pretty good. So the question than comes, what about Tamiya's version of the 60, is it full of inaccuracies ?? I thought it would be a good representation of the 60.

There is am M60 Series Spotters Guide available on the AFVNews Discussion Forum:

It has illustrations showing the detail differences between the various models.

RoG 1/35 M60A3 is almost impossible to find, and those few places that have it want $45+ for it...a bit steep. My understanding is that it went OOP a few years ago, (supposedly it was only a limited run) and stock is running out. Heck, I see far more Tamiya -A3's on eBay than the RoG kits.

Maybe so. I haven't looked for one in a few years. I last used one as the hull for my M60A2 back in '05.

Duane,
Sabot's M60 pictures show the Austrian Army variant M60A3Ö (decomsissioned meanwhile).
As far as I know, the M60A3Ö was equipped with TTS and a searchlight (as a backup).

Heck, even the original Esci/Ertl M60A3TTS kit was rare. Italeri began reissuing the Blazer and then the A1 in 2002 and Revell reissued the A3 in 2003. I don't think either kit was re-reissued between 2002-03 and 2009. What's out there is all there is until they decide to do another production run.

So would the Italeri kit be a better m-60 as compared to the tamiya version ?

WOW !!!
I would never had thought Italeri really out doing Tamiya. So im assuming Tamiya's version is just full of inaccuracies.

Actually Ecsi, the original moldmaker, out did Tamiya in the 80's with their then "new mold" M60 series - M60A1, M60A3 and Magach 6. AMT/ERTL, RoG, & Italeri used those Esci molds in their particular releases.
Tamiya, on the other hand, has been tweaking their sad 70's era M60A1 into the M60A3 in the late 80's then regressing in to make USMC M60A1 in the early 90's after ODS... The A3 and USMC parts that were added were nice but ya can only dress up a pig so much...

Dan,
I had heard that also... Tom St James, President of the Gary Owsley Fan Club & KC AMPS groupies, built an outstanding M60A1 or A3 and I seem to remember him using parts from every kit out there... I want to say that he favored the Tammy turret over the Esci one.
Part of Mr T's reworking of the M60A1 to the A3 kit was to add the cheeks to the lower front of the turret as well as add the mantlet cover. I know that neither got the front slope & periscope placement right on the hull.

Gary, Is your 'A1 from 1/1 CAV? I remember seeing them while in 1AD with the storage bin from a M47 on the turret rear. Dan

The CAV units must have hung on to their old storage bins. Dan
